Detail InformationEdit
The rock museum shows with the help of realistic models the various mining methods from the first excavation in the tunnel to opencast mining in modern quarries. To get 1 meter of serpentine 1,000 sq mtrs of normal serpentine has to be worked on. The rock is being used in industry and for building roads.
The 105m long, underground tunnel is in the mining part of the museum. Here the past comes alive. Already in the Middle Ages Bernstein was known for copper and sulphur. A permanent 80 sq mtrs large theme exhibition deals with the antimony mining in Schlaining that was closed in 1991.
A real sensation is the wonderful rock crystal crevice, which has been found on the Hohe Sonnblick, and has been transferred to the rock museum in Bernstein. The woodturning master Adolf Höfer tried in 1860 for the first time to work the serpentine. 150-year-old woodturning studios show the hard work. The bright-green stone is turned into jewellery, consumer goods or precious sculptures. A non-stop slide show informs you about the mining methods.
