Detail InformationEdit

Beach Vermelha, which means ‘Red Beach’, derives its name from the reddish yellow sand found here. This is in contrast with other beaches in Rio de Janeiro that have white sands. As Beach Vermelha is set back and protected from the rough surf of the Atlantic Ocean, the water here is quite calm most of the times. However it is occasionally unclean and therefore not always suitable for swimming.
It’s very convenient to get here from other tourist beach areas. The best way to get here is by taxi (R$10) or by bus service. Beach Vermelha is the smallest city beach in Rio de Janeiro, and it lies protected in a sheltered cove between the 688 ft Morro da Urca and the 754 ft Morro da Babilonia. This is also where you catch the 2 stage cable car up to Morra da Urca and then further on to the 1300 ft Sugar Loaf Mountain (Pão de Açúcar) spread out in the bay.
