While celebrating 1000 years of its existence in the year 2002, the town smiles down full of life from its rock plateau above the River Spree. Bautzen was settled as early as the 3rd century by East German tribes. They were followed in the 7th century by the Slavs and the first documented mention of “Budusin” came in 1002. The 17 towers, the bastions and the town wall still exude an unmistakable medieval charm. The evenings are heralded by the joyful laughter resounding from the countless cozy and friendly bars. Bautzen and its surroundings are home to the Sorbs. Of Slavic origin, the Sorbs have maintained many of their customs and traditions till date. Sorbian culture is more than just the “bird’s wedding” and colorful Easter folklore for nowhere is Easter celebrated so intensely and festively as in the Sorb communities.
