The capital city of Saint Kitts & Nevis Islands in the West Indies, Basseterre City is presently home to 15,500 residents. Located on the southwestern coast of Saint Kitts Island, Basseterre is the leading financial, commercial and industrial center of the Eastern Caribbean. Originally founded by the French in 1627, Basseterre, which was destroyed several times by fire, earthquake, floods, riots, hurricanes and colonial wars, has one of the most tragic histories as a capital. Skirting a 3.2 kilometer long Basseterre Bay, this city is very small and laid out in a grid pattern.
Despite the small size, Basseterre is home to two prestigious medical institutions and has played host to several international events, outbidding strong rivals. Featuring a deep water harbor which can efficiently handle cruise ships visiting this island, Basseterre is the main port importing and exporting substantial amounts of cargo. Along with the main Saint Kitts & Nevis international airport, Basseterre also provides bustling ferry services to and from Charlestown.
