Growing around the holy crocodile pool, Bakau was an extremely small village at the end of the 19th century. Tourism and fishing are the only and most important activity in Bakau, which has effectively enabled it develop into a popular tourist destination. Situated on the fringes of Serekunda City and close to Banjul, Bakau is a seaside tourist town located along the Atlantic Ocean coastline of the Gambia. Well known for the Bakau Kachikally – a crocodile pool, and its Botanical Garden, Bakau Town featuring several tourist hotels, resorts and beaches is spread all around Cape point.
Showcasing an interesting bustle of activity, especially when the long fishing pirogues come in, Bakau unloads huge catches of cheap Bonga Fish which are then made into local fish-balls. Colorful and vibrant, several other varieties of fishes which finally make fabulous local delicacies include the Butter Fish. But mind you, although known and appreciated for stunning rock cliffs and secluded spots, swimming activities can be hazardous at times.
