Baja is one of the most characteristic aquatic cities of the Hungarian Danube passages. The intimate small town was built on the shores of Danube and Sugovica backwater, in witch life the water plays an important role. The nearly Gemenc and South-Danube floodplains grove-forest covered areas with its protected plants and wildlife are one of the most beautiful parts of the country.
Baja is the centre of Northern-Bácska and the second largest city in Bács-Kiskun County. The City’s surrounding rivers with their sandy and shoal river banks offer capable areas for bathing and excursion. Between the natural sights of the region the river Danube, the Sugovica and the Gemenc-forest with their uniquely beautiful landscapes act on emphasized place. From Baja pleasant trips can be done with river cruiser ship, narrow gauge sylvan train, and bicycle or with a boat to the neighbourhood. Baja with its nearly forty thousand residents is since centuries the peaceful home of Hungarian, German, South-Slavs, Croatian, Serbian nationalities. On the main square of the town and nearby streets on the second Saturday of July, the famous Fish Soup Festival of Baja will be organized every year.
