Avantipur is located in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. This town is a famous tourist and pilgrim destination, mainly because of two very old and ancient temples located here. Tourists normally flock to Avantipur during the peak pilgrim season. The most famous temple among these is the Avantiswami temple, which was built during the time period of 855 to 883 AD. This temple is dedicated to the main deity Lord Vishnu, and is an enormous structure with a central shrine, surrounded by four smaller shrines. he region of Avantipur experiences a temperate climate, and the main seasons involved are those of summer, winter and monsoon. Summers here are mild, winters are very cold and the monsoon is moderate. The other ancient temple in the region is quite smaller than the former temple, and this temple is dedicated to the main deity Lord Shiva. This temple is called as the Avantishvara temple. These temples lie a kilometre apart from each other. The Avantishvara temple has a gateway made of entirely stone too. Both these temples have marvellous architecture, that kind that will surely attract tourists from far and near. There are many other destinations in and around Avantipur that you can visit during your trip to the place. Tulian Lake is yet another famous destination among the tourists who travel to Avantipur. HistoryEdit

Avantiswami temple, was built during the time period of 855 to 883 AD. This temple is dedicated to the main deity Lord Vishnu, and is an enormous structure with a central shrine. Avantishwara (Shiva) temple is the smaller temple at Avantipur and built a little before the larger Avantiswami temple. It is also the most ruined, with just the main entrance gateway still standing erect. The rest of the temple remains just up to base level. The entrance gateway leads into a court with the main shrine at the center, and four subsidiary platforms at each corner of the court. The base of the central shrine structure of this particular temple – with stairs projecting out from all four sides – could be similar to the base of the main tomb at the Zain-ul-Abidin tomb complex in Srinagar, and could suggest a reason behind the unusual shape of that structure.
