Moksha Kund is the first place to visit after having darshan at Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga and surrounding temples. The place is 500 meter away from main Bhimashankar temple. Here sage Kaushik had a long penance. Moksha means salvation. The story narrates that the ancestors of Ruchik, a disciple of sage Kaushik was bachelor and hence his forefathers couldn’t get salvation. Ruchik requested sage Kaushik to help him out. Sage Kaushik therefore created a kunda (pond with water from his kamandal (wooden water pot). To respect his penance, river Bhima emerged in the pond. Ancestors of Ruchik bathed in it and finally got salvation.

Sahyadri Wildlife Sanctuary is popularly known as Bhimashanker Wildlife Sanctuary. This sanctuary is located at a height ranging between 2,100 ft to 3,800 ft and is spread across an area of 120 sq. km. in Sahyadri ranges. Bhimashankar Sanctuary is home to a variety of endangered species of flora and fauna. Tourists can spot different animals in the sanctuary including leopards, barking deer, sambar, wild boar, hyena and jumbo size squirrel. Malabar grey hornbill, Quaker babbler, Malabar whistling thrush, green pigeon and grey jungle fowl are some of the birds that can be seen in this sanctuary. The Giant Indian Squirrel is one of the major attractions of the sanctuary. The dominant species of flora are Mango, Hirda, Behda, various medicinal herbs, bamboo and fern. In addition, tourists can also see Jyotivanti trees, which glow in the dark during rainy season. The sanctuary is surrounded by beautiful mountains and hills and ideal foractivities like hiking, rock climbing and trekking.

Holy Jyotirlinga is a beautiful temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is said that the temple is among the five Jyotirlingas situated in the state, which is built by Nana Phadanavis. The Holy Jyotirlinga displays the Nagra style of architecture. It is believed that Lord Shiva resided at the Sahyadri hills in the form of Bhima to kill the Rakshas Tripurasura. After the battle, the sweat of lord is believed to have become the Bhimarathi River. In the premises of the temple, there is a small Shani Temple and a huge bell displaying the structure of Hemadpanthi, which was also built by Nana Phadanavis. The temple is visited on the eve of Mahashivratri in large number. The hills of Manmod at a height of around 1,034 m have the carvings of Bhootling, Amba-Ambika and Bhimashanker in the Buddha style. Activities like trekking and birdwatching can be enjoyed at this hill.

The Bhimashankara temple is a composite of old and the new structures in the Nagara style of architecture. It shows the excellency of the skills achieved by ancient Vishwakarma sculptors. It is a modest yet graceful temple and it dates back to 13th century and the sabhamandap developed in the 18th century by Nana Phadnavis. The shikhara was built by Nana Phadnavis. The great Maratha ruler Shivaji is said to have made endowments to this temple to facilitate worship services. As with other Shiva temples in this area, the sanctum is at a lower level.

Train : Ujjain Junction Railway Station is an important railway station in Western railway zone. It is well connected to all major railway stations in India. Direct train services are available to Bhopal , Indore, Nagpur, Pune, Malwa, Delhi (Nizamuddin Exp), Mumbai (Avantika Exp), Kolkata (Shipra Express), Chennai (Jp Madras Expre) and many other cities.

Air : Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport in Indore is the nearest airport to Ujjain, which is situated 55 km away. Indore is air connected to major cities in India by public and private domestic airlines. Indore is connected to places like Jaipur, Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Bhopal and Chennai. Taxi services are available from Indore airport to Ujjain, costing about Rs 1,000. International travelers can get connecting flights to Indore from Delhi (800 km) or Mumbai (655 km) airport.

Others : Tangas are horse drawn carriages, and this mode of travel is slower than the above modes but cheaper. Fares will vary from Rs 10 to 30 depending on the distance covered. Auto rickshaws in Ujjain don’t run on meter and you need to negotiate on a fixed rate before opting for travel through auto rickshaws. These auto rickshaws however can be a safe mode of travel during night time. Fares may range anywhere from Rs 15 to 60. There are no night fares.
