Company Garden

India /Uttarakhand /Dehradun /Mussoorie

Sight Address : Company Garden or Municipal Garden is located at around 3 km from the Library point and in close vicinity of Lal Bahadur Shastri National Administration Academy, Mussoorie. Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Municipal Garden, housed amidst bamboo and deodar trees, it was earlier known as the ‘Company Garden’, is situated in the Happy Valley area of this beautiful town. Often known as Botanical Gardens, the park is maintained by the Garden Welfare Association of the destination. The garden houses a large variety of flora and birds, making it popular among nature lovers. Housing 800 different species of flowers, the garden has a nursery, which offers a wide range of saplings for sale. Some of the popular flowers present in the garden include Dahlias, Begonia, Pansy and Petunia. Apart from this, the garden also houses a huge China tree, which offers shade to tourists visiting the garden. Creating a replica of colonial gardens, the place has a lush green carpet of lawns and a fountain, which is located in its centre. Varieties of exotic flowers are also found in the gardens. Tourists can enjoy boating in the artificial lake, recently constructed within the garden. Company Garden at Mussoorie is a glorified Municipal Garden with fewer flowers. This beautiful picnic spot is easily accessible by a pony, rickshaw or car. Apart from this, the place can also be reached by Waverly Convent School road on foot.

Mussoorie Christ Church

India /Uttarakhand /Dehradun /Mussoorie

Sight Address : Mussoorie Christ Church Dehradun-Mussoorie Road, 7 km, Mussoorie Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Wrapped in an old world charm and still located on the bustling Library Road, Christ Church was built in the year 1836 for the increasing British community in that area. Said to be the oldest church in the entire Himalayan range, its major attraction is the pre-Raphaelite glass windows which represent the life of Jesus Christ in a very effective way. With its Gothic style architecture and colonial feel, this church takes you to the vintage era.One of the most prominent visitors of the church include the Princess of Wales who came here in 1906 and planted a Deodar sapling in the church yard. Today, a beautiful tree stands tall which acts as a memorabilia and is shown to the visitors. Then there is not-to-miss William Hill organ (in the Church itself) which dates back to more than 100 years.

Cloud's End Mussoorie

Cloud’s End Mussoorie

HistoryEdit

The Swetenhams moved back to England in 1964. It was acquired from them by Mr. Durga Ram Agarwal, who was the last General Manager of the Sirmor and Kaulagarh Tea Estate, as a summer house for his family. Mr. Agarwal could take a look at his new possession only a year later, after he had got a road constructed from Hathipaon to Cloud End for his Jeep. His youngest son, Mr. Digvijay Agarwal, inherited the state from him, and in 1991, started the resort, with the support and assistance of his wife, the late Mrs. Bhavna Agarwal. It was a conscious decision on their part to make the resort as self-reliant as possible and it runs on harvested rainwater, solar and wind energy. The one concession made to modern existence is the Internet connection.

Detail InformationEdit

Landour, a small cantonment town contiguous with Mussoorie, is about 35 km (22 mi) from the city of Dehradun in the northern state of Uttarakhand in India. The twin towns of Mussoorie and Landour, together, are a well-known British Raj-era hill station in northern India. Mussoorie-Landour was widely known as the “Queen of the Hills”. The name Landour is drawn from Llanddowror, a village in Carmarthenshire in southwest Wales. During the Raj, it was common to give nostalgic English, Scottish, Welsh or Irish names to one’s home (or even to British-founded towns), reflecting one’s ethnicity. Names drawn from literary works were also common, as from those by Robert Burns, Walter Scott, Thomas Hardy, Robert Louis Stevenson and many others.

Landour

HistoryEdit

Landour is within Dehradun District of the former United Provinces. The United Provinces themselves were carved out of the former Northwest Province of the vast Bengal Presidency, which stretched from Burma to the Khyber Pass; accordingly, early accounts show Landour as part of “Bengal”, which was technically true though the description was incomplete.Landour was initially built by and for the British Indian Army. From 1827 when a sanatorium was built in Landour the town was a convalescent station for the military, and hence much of Landour is a Cantonment. The original sanatorium is now occupied by the Institute of Technology Management (“ITM”) of the DRDO; it is at the eastern end of the Landour ridge. In the early 20th century, a full British Military Hospital (BMH) was opened, with a medical staff than specialized in tropical diseases; the hospital closed soon after 1947. Also within the ITM premises is the former Soldiers’ Furlough Home, a holiday home for British and Irish soldiers and JCOs in Indian regiments who lacked the means to return to Europe regularly. Or, the holidaying soldiers were serving in British regiments on rotation in India, their tours of duty lasting anywhere from 6 to 48 months. In terms of area, Landour Cantonment comprises about two-thirds of Landour; the remainder includes Landour Bazaar, which stretches along the spur that connects to Mussoorie.
