Adi Shankara also known as (Adi) Shankaracharya and Shankara Bhagavatpada, spelled variously as Sankaracharya, (Ādi) Śaṅkarācārya, Śaṅkara Bhagavatpāda, Śaṅkara Bhagavatpādācārya – was one of the most revered Hindu philosophers and theologians from India who consolidated the doctrine of advaita vedānta.His works in Sanskrit establish the doctrine of advaita, the unity of the ātman and nirguna brahman, brahman without attributes. His works elaborate on ideas found in the Upanishads. He wrote copious commentaries on the Vedic canon (Brahma Sutra, principal upanishads and Bhagavad Gita) in support of his thesis. The main opponent in his work is the Mimamsa school of thought, though he also offers arguments against the views of some other schools like Samkhya and certain schools of Buddhism. Shankara travelled across the Indian subcontinent to propagate his philosophy through discourses and debates with other thinkers. He established the importance of monastic life as sanctioned in the Upanishads and Brahma Sutra, in a time when the Mimamsa school established strict ritualism and ridiculed monasticism. He is reputed to have founded four mathas (“monasteries”), which helped in the historical development, revival and spread of Advaita Vedanta of which he is known as the greatest revivalist Adi Shankara is believed to be the organiser of the Dashanami monastic order and the founder of the Shanmata tradition of worship.

Taxi : Taxies are easily available to travel up to Gaurikund.

BUS : Kedarnath is well connected through road. The National Highway from Delhi to Mana (538 km) is accessible throughout the year. Kedarnath can be accessed by foot from GauriKund. Gaurikund is connected by state buses to Rishikesh, Dehradun, Kotdwara, Haridwar and other hill stations of Kumaon and Garhwal Hills. The bus charges are not fixed. It will vary depending on season.

Train : Nearest railhead at Rishikesh, 189 km away from Kedarnath. Prepaid taxi services are available in the railway station which charge about Rs 3,000. One has to travel 207 km by road and the rest 14 km by foot to reach Kedarnath.

Air : The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun, which is about 239 km from Kedarnath. Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun is a domestic airport located at about 20 km away from city center of Dehradun. Taxi cabs are available from Dehradun airport to Kedarnath, which cost about Rs 3,500. The airport operates daily flights to Delhi. Nearest International airport is Delhi (458 km).

Others : From Gaurikund, it’s a grueling uphill trek to the temple. Expect it to take around six hours. Those who don’t feel up to walking can opt to take a pony, which will reduce the duration of the trek by an hour. There are porters available to help carry luggage as well. Alternatively, Kedranath temple is also accessible by helicopter! Pawan Hans Helicopters Ltd. (owned by the Indian Government) and Prabhatam Aviation (a private company) provide the services. Silversmiths and Shoemakers ply their wares alongside second-hand clothes vendors. Ancient Victorian gadgetry vies for space with the more modern gizmos. Visit the bazaar to pick up necessities as well as some unexpected items. After shopping, stop for some breakfast and cold coffee at Char Dukaan, said to be frequented by Ruskin Bond. Tapkeshwar Mahadev Temple is located at a distance of around 40 km from the city centre. Situated at the outskirts of the city, the popular cave temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is situated on the banks of a seasonal river.The name of this temple is derived from the word Tapak, which means to drip. It is believed that the water drips naturally on the Shivalinga enshrined in the cave from the ceiling and hence, the temple was named as Tapkeshwar temple. According to the popular legend, it is believed that from this cave Lord Shiva made milk flow for Ashwathama, the son of Rishi Dronacharya. Apart from this, the temple is surrounded by sulphur springs, which are believed to have medicinal values. 1. Driving in hilly area is risky, always keep control of your speed especially in the curves if possible avail services of a driver.
2. In Hilly road please dont take over form the wrong side as its is very risky.
3. Mussoorie has an enormous range of weather conditions, as it can be largely warm and hot in summer (day time), and mild to pleasant cold in winters. Like any hill station Mussoorie, experiences unpredictable and sudden changes in weather. Do check the type of clothing and other equipment you may require for the season you are visiting.
4. Always keep your Identity Card to avoid hasselment in hotels. Etc..
5. Dispose all litter carefully. The use of Plastic Polythene Bags is banned.
