HistoryEdit

The history of the temple itself is given in the two long inscriptions fixed in the walls of the mandapa of the temple. Accordingly we are told that Kiragrama (modern Baijnath) situated on the bank of the river Binduka was a part of Trigarta (the territory lying between the rivers Ravi and Satluj, roughly represented by districts of Kangra and Jalandhar) under the suzerainty of king Jayachandra, the overlord of Jalandhara. Under him a Rajanaka (local chief) Lakshmanachandra, who was matrimonially related to Jayachandra from his mother’s side, was ruling over Kiragrama. Genealogy of Lakshmanachandra (see box) is given in these inscriptions.

Pong Dam Wetlands

India /Himachal Pradesh /Kangra /Kangra

Pong Dam Wetlands, Kangra, Himachal Pradesh
Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Pong Dam Wetlands straddle the Beas River in the Shivalik foothills in Himachal’s Kangra District. Golden fields of wheat spread uninterrupted, as far as the eye can see, on either side of the banks of Pong Lake. This place was initially a reservoir that supplied water for irrigation and power, and prevented flooding in the Punjab plains. The entire reservoir (42 km long, 19 km wide) was declared a Wildlife Sanctuary by the Himachal government in 1986, a National Wetland in 1994 and a Ramsar Site by the central Ministry of Environment and Forests in 2002. The unique combination of shallow and deep waters, mudflats, stony ground, village groves and cultivated wheat tracts attract thousands of winter birds from Europe and Central Asia, in addition to its domiciled avifauna. You can even locate here some of the world’s most vulnerable species that congregate the wetlands between October and February.

Kangra Nagarkot Fort

India /Himachal Pradesh /Kangra /Kangra

Kangra Fort, Old Kangra, Himachal Pradesh

Edit

Detail InformationEdit

The Kangra Fort was the seat of power of the Katoch Raja’s and is believed to have been founded by Shusharma Chand Katoch. It was the ancient capital of the Katoch Kingdom and symbol of power in the Punjab hill states. The Fort of Nagarkot (Kangra) stands as a mute witness to the ravages of conquerors from Mahmud of Ghazni (1009 AD) to the emperor Jehangir (1619 AD) and the disastrous earthquake of April, 1905. Emperor Akbar made many attempts to capture this fort but could not succeed. This place is now called as ” Purana Kangra”. One can enter the fort by a narrow path. It was protected by a number of gates named after its winners like Jehangir, Ranjit Singh.

Kangra Fort

Kangra Fort

HistoryEdit

Kangra Fort, or Kot Kangra, or Nagarkot, as it was called, was recorded in history in 1009 CE when Mahmud of Ghazni attacked it. The fort belonged to the Katoch kings of Kangra, the remains of whose palaces can be seen today at the very top of the ridge. Attacked over a thousand years ago by Ghazni, the Tughlaks, Akbar and Jahangir, the Gurkhas and Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the fort was reduced to its present state of ruin by a more recent but older force — an earthquake in 1905. This calamity killed over 1,300 people in Kangra alone and ruined the town, fort and temples of the valley. The fort, also known as the Nagar Kot, is constructed on the confluence of the two rivers, Banganga and Manjhi. Located at a distance of 27 km from Palampur, this fort became historical when Mahmud of Ghazni attacked the Kangra city, in the year 1909. An important and the only unconquered fort in the region, it is famous for the carvings and miniature paintings, which have been restored and preserved at the Kangra museum. Apart from this, the fort also consists of various gates, shrines and a number of old palaces. An important feature inside the fort is also the presence of numerous Jain and Brahmanical temples, which date back to the 9th century AD. The fort ever since was extremely famous for the riches it harboured inside its premises, which prompted Mahmud of Ghazni to invade it in the first place. The entrance to the fort is guarded by wooden planks built on the base of an arch constructed with sandstones. A moat separates the fort from the outside world.

India /Himachal Pradesh /Kangra /Nagarkot
Brajeshwari Devi temple, located in the old Kangra Township, Nagarkot, Kangra Centre, Himachal Pradesh. Edit

Detail InformationEdit

The Brajeshwariidevi, also known as Vajrábái and Vajrayogini, is considered an incarnation of Goddess Parvati or Aadi-Maya on earth. Her name literally means “the lady of the Vajra (thunderbolt)”. The original temple was built by the Pandavas at the time of Mahabharatha. Legend says that one day Pandavas saw Goddess Durga in their dream in which she told them that she is situated in the Nagarkot village. That same night they made a magnificent temple for her in the Nagarkot village. This temple was looted a number of time by the Muslim invaders. Inside the main area Goddess Brajeshwari is present in the form of Pindi. The temple also have a small temple of Bhairav. In front of the main temple an idol of Dhayanu Bhagat is also present. He had offered his head to the Goddess at the time of Akbar. The present structure has three tombs in it, which is unique in itself.

HistoryEdit

The Brajeshwari Devi temple, is said to have been built over the charred breasts of Sati. This shrine, once renown for its great wealth, has been plundered relentlessly over the ages. The first of the plunderers was Mahmud of Ghazni, who looted it in 1009. A mosque was built on the ruins and a garrison was left behind. 35 years later, the local king regained its possession. The shrine was repaired and a replica of the idol was enshrined. The temple was filled with gold, silver and diamonds only to be ransacked again in 1360 by Firoz Tughlaq. Later Emperor Akbar visited the shrine with his Dewan, Todar Mal and restored it to its former grandeur. Located at an altitude of 615 m, the Kangra town is around 15 km away from Dharamshala.

Ambika Devi Temple, Kangra Fort, Kangra, Himachal Pradesh Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Visit Ambika Devi Temple for a good dose of history, folklore and outstanding architecture. A must visit for photographers as well, the temple is home to a rock cut idol of Goddess Ambika. She was supposedly the main deity of the family of Kangra kings. Going by the folklore, the first king of the clan was born from a sweat drop of the Goddess, as she tired of fighting a demon. The idol stays intact even now, though some parts of the fort were destroyed in an earthquake and from many attacks that it saw from the British, Muhammed Ghajini and other Indian kings. There’s an air of fascinating surreal charm that might be owing to its location, as it overlooks the snow laden Dhauladhar mountain range. Atheist or believers in God, you can take your pick as per your whims, but this place counts as a must visit in Kangra.

Jwalamukhi Temple is situated 30 km south of Kangra valley. Kangra, Himachal Pradesh
Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Jwalamukhi Temple is dedicated to Goddess Jwalamukhi. There are natural flames in the temple which are worshipped as a manifestation of the nine Goddesses – Mahakali, Unpurna, Chandi, Hinglaj, Bindhya Basni, Maha Lakshmi, Saraswati, Ambika and Anji Devi. These flames burn continuously without any fuel or assistance and may be seen erupting from a rock-side.Ancient legends speak of a time when demons lorded over the Himalaya mountains and harassed the Gods. Led by Lord Vishnu, the gods decided to destroy them. They focused their strengths and huge flames rose from the ground. From that fire, a young girl took birth. She is regarded as Adishakti-the first ‘shakti’. Just a few feet above the Jwalamukhi temple there is a six-feet deep pit with a circumference of about three-feet. At the bottom of this pit there is another small pit about one and a half feet deep with hot water bubbling all the time.

HistoryEdit

The temple was looted and destroyed by Mahmud of Ghazni in 1009. The Mughal Emperor Akbar, on learning about the legends of Jwalamukhi, tried to douse the flames with a stream of water but could not succeed in doing so. Out of reverence, Akbar offered a Gold umbrella (Chatra) to the Goddess, but the umbrella turned into an unknown metal suggesting that the Goddess did not accept his offering. Maharaja Ranjit Singh paid a visit to the temple in 1815 and the dome of the temple was gold-plated by him.
