HistoryEdit

Sujanpur Tira was the capital of Katoch Dynasty and the old fort is worth visiting. Popularly known alongwith its twin title ‘Tira’, this fort was built by Raja Abhaya Chand of Kangra in 1758. In the early 19th century this was the home of the famous Raja Sansar Chand – renownded patron of the Kangra school of miniature paintings. The fort has a Barahdari Hall’, where Sansar Chand used to hold court, some shrines and excellent wall paintings.

Wetland area at Haripur is an another excellent place for birding is the village of Bangoli along the Haripur-Dera Gopipur Road. To arrange a boat tour through the Wildlife office and a visit to one of the islands, may be possible, if you are staying at The Judge’s Court. The waters of the lake are blue and lovely. You can see flocks of darters, or a posse of pochards, and many ducks ruminating along a sandbank. Rancer Island, where the Forest Rest House is located, is inviting but it’s a steep hike up. Birds call out to each other among the trees and flower beds. A family of graceful demoiselle cranes may be sunning themselves on a sandbank. It’s hard to get bookings in the high season (Oct-Feb).

Dada Siba Temple, housing a beautiful architecture, this temple is full of Kangra paintings and temple was constructed in 1830 by the local king Ram Singh. It is believed that the king brought the principal artisan from Haryana, the idols of Lord Krishna and Radha from Jaipur and Jodhpur stones from Hoshiarpur. Guler (30 km) has been a celebrated seat of the Kangra School of Art. The raja had his principal artisan brought in from Haryana, Jodhpur stone transported from Hoshiarpur, and the Radha-Krishna idols brought from Jaipur! A must for art and heritage lovers.

Chamunda Devi is considered as the wrathful form of Durga, but at the same time, the Goddess is kind to her true devotees. The term ‘Chamunda’ has been derived from two words, ‘Chanda’ and ‘Munda’. The Behna-Mahadev Temple is one of the prominent religious sites of the Kangra region in Himachal Pradesh. The Behna-Mahadev Temple boasts of intricate architectural patterns both in its interior as well as exterior. The major attraction of this temple is the ancient brass mask which is used to cover the head of Lord Shiva. Reaching the temple is not much of ado and that a visit to this temple is quite mandatory for the Hindu devotees and visitors. This is considered one of the biggest gable-roofed Hindu temples nestled in the Satluj Valley. The mandapa and corridor built around the sanctuary are open to all sides. In this temple, angled struts support the overhanging stone-tiled roof.
