Rajarani Temple 6 Km from Bhubaneswar Bus Stand And Railway Station, Bhubaneswar. Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Rajarani temple is one of the most renowned temples in Bhubaneswar, the capital city of Odisha. It is made from the wonderful red and gold sandstone, which is locally known as Rajarani and this is what gives the temple its name of ‘Raja Rani’. The major attractions of the temple consist of the elaborately carved figurines. Rajarani temple of Bhubaneshwar is dedicated to Lord Brahma. The origin of this temple can be dated back to the eleventh century. It is an epitome of elegance and grace. The sculptural images adorning its façade and interiors are simply outstanding. Females are portrayed in different postures, like holding the child in their arms, holding mirror in their hand, etc. There is no other temple of this kind in the entire state of Orissa. Rajarani temple has also been ornamented with marvelous artistic sculptural carvings and stands enclosed within a beautiful garden.

Rajarani Temple

Rajarani Temple

HistoryEdit

Rajarani temple is unique in that there is no deity associated with it. There’s a story that the temple was a pleasure resort of an Oriya king and queen (raja and rani). However, more realistically, the temple got its name from the variety of sandstone used to make it.

Parvati Temple Near Lingaraja Temple, Bhubaneswar. Edit

Detail InformationEdit

The temple of Parvati is a fine architectural piece, remarkable for the exuberance of its carvings, but overshadowed by the ‘Lingaraja’ temple itself. The temple, structurally and stylistically, is definitely later than the Lingaraja temple, its later limit furnished by a small inscription, engraved on the plinth near the south door of the ‘Jagamohana’. The east-facing temple, whose enshrined deity is the Goddess Parvatti, has been operational since construction. The temple, which stands on a pista, has a vimana and a front porch. The vimana has typical Dravidian features, including bada, gandi and mastaka. The base of the pabhaga is constructed of five moulds including khura, kumbha, pata, kani and basanta. The gandi has seven receding tiers that are separated by two potalas. The lower potala has four tiers and the upper potala has three tiers. The raha niches are decorated with talagarbhika of a typical khakhara style, complimented by three plain vertical bands. The tala jangha and upara jangha are decorated with khakhara mundi and pidha mundi.
