Sembawang Park (Chinese: 三巴旺公园) is a 15 hectare park situated in Sembawang, in the north of Singapore facing the Straits of Johor overlooking Malaysia. It is located at the end of Sembawang Road, where the former Sembawang Road End Bus Terminal is.
Sembawang Jetty
In 1940s, the British started building a 30m long jetty, and later abandoned it during the Japanese occupation. The Japanese completed the construction of the jetty. The private jetty stands in complete shape only from the efforts of these once warring colonial forces. Now, it is a Popular fishing ground.
Seletar Pier
Seletar Pier was used for transport of construction materials during Naval Base construction in early 1920s. On 20 January 1942, the pier was bombed by Japanese, and only the remains of the Seletar pier stands at the end of Sembawang Road.
Sembawang Beach
Sembawang Beach is one of the few natural sandy beaches remaining in Singapore. The other natural sandy beach is Changi. The Labrador Beach is also natural but rocky.

Sembawang Park

HistoryEdit

Sembawang Park gets its name from Sembawang Tree Kayea ferruginea. There is one Sembawang tree at the centre of the car park C1 close to the Sembawang Bus terminal. The Sembawang park has many interesting connections to Singapore’s historical past. The pathways inside the park are old roads, that have recently been repaved with asphalt.
Singapore Naval Base
Located on the west of the park is the Sembawang Shipyard, which was His Majesty’s Naval Base (H M Naval Base) of the British Royal Navy from the 1920s until Singapore’s independence. The busy and geographically advantaged port in Singapore and the urgent need for a naval base made the British decide to establish a Naval Base in Singapore. In 1923, the construction of Naval Base began in Sembawang and completed in 1938. In between it slowed down due to the Naval Disarmament Treaty. The fully operational Naval Base was opened by Sir Shenton Thomas, the then Singapore Governor on 14 February 1938; it was the largest Dockyard outside the British Naval Base. The battleship HMS Prince of Wales and the battlecruiser HMS Repulse with four destroyers forming the “Z” force landed in Singapore’s Naval Base on 2 December 1941. Following the Pearl Harbor attack, the Japanese also bought Johore coastlines just opposite the Naval Base and attacked the two warships unexpectedly. The two unsinkable war cruisers sank on 10 December 1941, on whose memory a Sembawang Memorial was unveiled in Sembawang wharfs in 2005.The Dockyard was closed down in January 1942 realizing that Japanese could use the Naval Base. The British surrendered to Japanese on 15 February 1942, whose details could be found much more from Memories at Old Ford Factory museum where the surrender was signed. For the following three years, till 1945, the Japanese used the naval base to service and repair their navy ships. On 6 September 1945, the Japanese surrendered to the British in Sembawang fleet shore accommodation, now called HMS Terror. From 1968, the naval base was converted and came to use as Sembawang Shipyard. The attacks and operations of the Naval Base at Sembawang are closely connected to the Jetty, Pier and accommodation at the Sembawang Park itself.

Located at 155 Middle Road, Sculpture Square is a venue in Singapore dedicated to the exhibition and promotion of three-dimensional art. Housed in a historic nineteenth-century church building, exhibitions have been held every month at the arts venue since its inauguration in March 1999. Sculpture Square is noted for its well-received children’s visual arts programmes that include the Popular Sculpture Carnival and the Children’s Sculpture Exhibition.The Sculpture Square project was the brainchild of Singaporean sculptor Sun Yu-Li, who felt that Singapore lacked the facilities necessary for the development and exhibition of three-dimensional art. In the search for a suitable location, Sun came up with the idea of turning an abandoned nineteenth-century church building at Middle Road into a new centre for three-dimensional art. As the church building has a 9m-high ceiling and is unobstructed by pillars, the building was ideal for the exhibition of large sculptures.
In December 1995, Sun discussed the project with a friend, Edmund Cheng of property developer Wing Tai Holdings Singapore. Cheng’s studies in architecture at school had sparked a personal interest in three-dimensional art. Cheng thus shared Sun’s interest in promoting the art form in Singapore and the two began working on the project together shortly after.

Sculpture Square The Chapel

In 1996, the National Arts Council’s (NAC) Art Housing scheme allocated two formerly disused buildings to Sculpture Square. The abandoned church building that Sun had suggested was one of these, while the other was a former budget hotel located next to the church building. NAC provided additional aid to the project by subsidising the costs involved in refurbishing the venue. The remaining costs were paid for through donations from private donors and organisations such as the Real Estate Developers’ Association of Singapore, the Shaw Foundation and the Lee Foundation.The church building is considered one of the few remaining examples of gothic architecture in Singapore, and the building was marked as a historic site by the National Heritage Board in 2000. With a rich history spanning over 130 years, the building has served at various times as the former Middle Road Church, the Baba Malay Methodist Church, the Methodist Girls’ School, the May Blossom Restaurant during the Japanese Occupation, and even briefly in the 1980s as a car workshop.The church building houses Sculpture Square’s main 2,034 ft² gallery while the adjacent two-storey building incorporates the resource centre, the main office and a smaller gallery. The courtyard that lies between the two buildings is frequently used for outdoor activities such as the annual Sculpture Carnival. A small restaurant is also situated at the courtyard.The exhibition spaces at Sculpture Square are made available to art dealers, schools, professional and amateur artists alike. Young artists and non-profit groups pay lower rental rates for galleries than established artists and professional companies.

Tucked within the Arts House, the Screening Room is an intimate 75-seat film theatre. Once a space for administrative duties in the Old Parliament House, the space has now been transformed into a cinema for screening independent films.It presents a mix of domestic and international films, and hosts talks and regular workshops. The old flip-up chairs housed in the heritage building gives the Screening Room a quaint, old-school feel.Established to provide support for independent filmmakers, the Screening Room gives budding auteurs a platform to organise film premieres and festivals. The Science Centre Singapore (Abbreviation: SCS, Chinese: 新加坡科学馆), previously known as Singapore Science Centre[1] is a scientific institution in Jurong East, Singapore, specialising in the promotion of scientific and technological education for the general public. With over 850 exhibits spread over eight exhibition galleries, it sees over a million visitors a year today, and over 17 million visitors up to the year 2003 when it celebrated its silver jubilee.

The Science Centre was born in from the then National Museum of Singapore into a separate institution so that the latter could specialise in its artistic and historical collections. This idea was first mooted in 1969 by the Science Council of Singapore, and was subsequently approved by the government, who was keen to promote scientific education in the rapidly modernising country keen to tap into the technological sector.The SCS building’s architecture was decided by an architectural design competition organised by the Science Centre Board. Raymond Woo’s entry was selected, and was thus commissioned as the architect for the project. Built at a cost of S$12 million on a 60,000 m² site in Jurong East, it was officially opened on 10 December 1977 by Dr Toh Chin Chye, who was the Minister-in-charge of the Science Centre Board.On 7 December 2007, the Science Centre rebranded itself to be known as “Science Centre Singapore” (“SCS”).

The Burmese Buddhist Temple (also known as Maha Sasana Ramsi; Burmese: သာသနာ့ရံသီ မြန်မာဘုရားကျောင်း; Chinese: 缅甸玉佛寺; pinyin: Miǎndiàn yùfósì) is located on Tai Gin Road in Novena, Singapore. Founded in 1875, the temple is the oldest Theravada institution and the only Burmese Buddhist temple of its kind in Singapore.[1] The temple houses the largest pure white marble statue of the Buddha outside of Myanmar, and has become a religious landmark for Burmese and Singaporean devotees to make merits and take part in merit sharing activities alike.

The Burmese Buddhist Temple (BBT) was founded by a Burmese, named U Thar Hnin, also known as Tang Sooay Chin, at 17 Kinta Road (off Serangoon Road) in 1875. In 1878, U Thar Hnin donated the temple to U Kyaw Gaung (also known as Khoo Teogou), a traditional Burmese physician.[2] The temple houses the largest pure white marble statue of the Buddha outside of Myanmar. It is also the only Burmese Buddhist temple built outside of Myanmar in the traditional Burmese architectural style.

Shuttle – Shared six-seater MaxiCab shuttle service to designated areas/hotels costs $7 and can be booked in advance or in the arrivals hall. 6AM-2AM, every 15-30 min.
Subway – MRT trains run from a station between T2 and T3, but you’ll need to change trains at Tanah Merah to a city-bound train: just exit through the left hand side door and cross the platform. The 30 min ride to City Hall station costs $1.90 plus a refundable $1 deposit, and trains run 05:31-23:18.
Bus – Bus terminals can be found in the basements of T1, T2 and T3. 06:00-23:59 only. Fares are less than $2.00, exact fare required (no change given) if you pay cash.
