Chamarajendra Academy of Visual Arts (CAVA) Mysore is a traditional centre of arts and crafts. It has carved out a unique place as a distinct cultural centre. For the Mysore Maharajas, it was not just their headquarters with their royal quarters, but the cultural capital of Karnataka. With a view to preserve this unique status, they established the Chamarajendra Technical Institute in 1906, offering courses in carving, painting, bamboo works, inlay works, mat weaving, smithy, carpentry, sheet metal and other trades. Over the years, the Institute became famous by producing some of the best artists and craftsmen who brought laurels to Mysore. Later, in the 80’s, the need to bifurcate art courses with other industrial trades was felt. It was realised that the growth of Mysore’s unique artistic and cultural tradition is as important as growth in other fields. This called for an authentic art school that could boast of educational infrastructure on par with the prevailing national standards. An independent academy on the lines of the famed J.J. School of Art, Bombay, was conceived. As a result of this, the Chamarajendra Academy of Visual Arts (CAVA) was set up in 1982.

The Shweta Varahaswamy temple is also known as the Varahaswamy temple. The temple is built in the architectural style followed by the Hoysalas. The shrine of the Goddess has an elegantly carved doorway and intricately carved pillars and tower. The Navaranga has stucco niches at the sides of the entrance. The Navaranga has beautiful mural paintings on its walls. These paintings depict incidents from the Ramayana and the Bhagavata. These paintings especially pay attention to the exploits of Lord Krishna.

The Folklore Museum has a remarkable collection of folk culture. The museum has 6500 folk art and folklore articles on display and the museum is celebrated as one of the largest of its kind in Asia. The Folklore museum has one of the most important ethnographic collections of South Indian toys, puppets and household objects. The exhibits include an excellent collection of carved wooden figures from the different villages of Karnataka, rural costumes, utensils, ornaments, metal artifacts, implements and tools used in different rural professions. The museum also houses models of temples, houses decorative masks, and ceremonial headwear and has a section that displays leather shadow puppets. The museum is famous for the two wooden chariots that it has as part of its collection. The museum is close to the Kukkarahalli Lake that is part of the University campus.

The Oriental Research Institute (ORI) at Mysore, India is a research institute which collects, exhibits, edits and publishes rare manuscripts in Sanskrit and Kannada, with a few works in English, Tamil, and Telugu. Formerly it was known as the Oriental Library. The aim of this Institution is to collect, preserve, collate, edit and publish the rare valuable Sanskrit and Kannada Palm leaf as well as paper Manuscripts of our Nation. Thousands of Palm leaf and Paper Manuscripts were collected and Pundits well versed in Sanskrit, Kannada, English and other Languages were appointed for identification, classification and cataloguing of those manuscripts. In addition to the manuscripts many rare books in Sanskrit, Kannada, and English were also collected by the pundits working in the Institutefor Study, Research and Publication purposes. As a corollary, a libraryconsisting of works on Literature, culture and allies subjects was also developed. Valuable classics in Sanskrit and Kannada were critically edited by the pundits of the Institute and published with the scholarly introductions.

The Oriental Research Institute was established in Mysore by His Highness Sri. ChamarajaWodeyar Bhahadur, the then Maharaja of Mysore, in the year 1891 October. Brindavan Garden is one of the most visited places in Mysore by locals and tourists. The garden, built by Sir Mirza Ismail, has a botanical park, with boat rides in the lake, as well as fountains. The highlight of the garden is its symmetric design and beautifully laid out terrace gardens, studded with topiaries, pergolas and gazebos. However, the illuminated dancing fountains in the northern side of the garden steals the show. A beautifully orchestrated show involving harmonious coupling of water with colourful lights and music, the fountain comes to life after sunset. Lasers are installed along with the lights to make the show more dramatic. These beautiful gardens are laid out below the Krishnaraja Sagar Dam (known as Kannambadi to the locals), built across the river Cauvery, which itself is a superb example of excellent engineering and is a major tourist attraction.

Brindavan Garden, Mysore

The Brindavan Gardens lies adjoining the Krishnarajasagara dam which is built across the river Kaveri. The work on laying out this garden was started in the year 1927 and completed in 1932. The garden is maintained by the Cauvery Niravari Nigama (Cauvery Irrigation Department), a Government of Karnataka enterprise. It is spread across an area of 60 acres (240,000 m2). Adjoining it is also a fruit orchard spread across 75 acres (300,000 m2) and 2 horticultural farms, Nagavana (30 acres) and Chandravana (5 acres). The garden is laid out in 3 terraces which contain water fountains, Ficus trees, foliage plants such as Duranta plumaria and Euphorbia and flowering plants like Celosia, Marigold and bougainvillea. The garden was renovated in 2005 with a cost of Rs. 50 million. The renovation included sprucing up the musical fountain using a digitised system and repairs of dysfunctional fountains.

The Railway Museum of Mysore is an interesting place to know about the spectacular journey of the railways in India spanning a period of more than 150 years. The museum displays ancient steam locomotives, carriages, special purpose vehicles, wagons, telecommunication equipment and several other things related to the operation of the railways through the ages. The Railway Museum of Mysore preserves and presents a slice of the history of Indian Railways. The museum has a fascinating collection of several ancient steam locomotives and carriages. A rare collection of royal carriages belonging to the erstwhile Mysore rulers, the Wodeyar Kings, is one of the high points of the museum. Visitors can have a look at two of the royal coaches used by the kings of the former Mysore Kingdom. They offer an idea about the grand nature in which the royalty of our country travelled in those days. Occupying a place of pride inside the museum is the first steam engine built in India. A major attraction of the Railway Museum at Mysore is the Maharani’s Saloon.

The Mysore Railway Museum is the second such museum in the country after the National Railway Museum in Delhi.
