India/Tamil Nadu /Nilgiris /Ooty

Nilgiri Mountain Railway, Ooty, Nilgiris, Tamil Nadu. Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Nilgiri Mountain Railway Train has an interesting history apart from the vintage charm that it exudes. The “Nilgiris toy train” connects Ooty to Mettupalyam at the foot of the Nilgiris. The Nilgiri Hill railway, blue and cream with wooden coaches and large windows are widely regarded as a marvel of engineering. Any tourist who comes to visit Ooty wants to travel by this train. The first train steamed out in the year 1899 and it boasts of being designed and built by the Swiss locomotive works. The train covers a distance of 46 kms between Mettupalyam and Ooty in four and a half hours. There are five stations between Mettupalyam and Coonor namely Kallar, Adderley, Hill Grove, Runnymede and Kateri. This train averages at 10.4 km per hour and is probably the slowest train in India. It leaves Mettupalyam at 7.45 a.m. and reaches Ooty by 12 noon. The train must reverse a short distance before climbing up the hills to Ooty.

Ooty Lake

India/Tamil Nadu /Nilgiris /Ooty

Ooty lake is located in Ooty in the Nilgiris district, Tamil Nadu, India. Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Ooty Lake is perhaps the most popular destination among the tourists who visit Ooty. The Lake is an artificial one that was built by John Sullivan in 1824 and covers an area of 65 acres. It was constructed after collecting the water that would flow down from the mountains during the monsoons. However, it had to be emptied out thrice after it went above its mark. The idea was to prepare the lake for fishing by local fishermen. The lake is no longer its original size and has shrunk because of various geographical factors and because of the construction of a bus stand, a race course and a lake park in the vicinity. Today the lake is popular among the tourists because of the boating opportunity that it offers. One can enjoy the scenic beauty of the lake by leisurely boating in its calm waters. In fact, during the month of May a boating race is organized by the state government and the event lasts for two days.

Tiger’s Cave

India/Tamil Nadu /Kancheepuram /Salurankuppam

Tiger’s Cave is located near Salurankuppam village at a distance of 5 km to the north of Mahabalipuram. Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Tiger’s Cave is actually a rock-cut cave temple dedicated to goddess Durga and is crowned with several heads of the mythical creature, Yali, which looks like a lion or a tiger. While one side of the cave is crowded with heads, the other is carved into a single ferocious head of a Yali. A puddle of water below reflects the many heads as several eyes of the animal gape at you, giving the village a new name. Built by Narasimhavarman I in the 7th century, Tiger’s Cave is actually a porch or a mantapa from where the king perhaps gave audience. The mandapam is like an open-air theatre and, even today, it is one of the venues of the Mahabalipuram Festival.

Dharmaraja Cave Temple at Mamallapuram in Tamil Nadu, from the south-west, taken by Alexander Rea in the 1880s. Mamallapuram, a tiny village south of Madras, was a flourishing port of the Pallava dynasty during the 7th – 8th centuries. The site is famous for an early group of monolithic temples, known as the ‘Pancha Ratha’ and some monolithic sculptures assigned to the 7th century reign of Narasimhavarman Mahamalla (reigned 630-668 AD). Along a granite hill are some rock-cut caves and the celebrated sculptured rock depicting Arjuna’s penance. The Dharmaraja Cave Temple dates from the early seventh century. It consists of an open mandapa with three sanctuaries excavated into the rear wall. Guardian figures flank the doorway but the architectural elements are unadorned. Edit
