Undavalli Caves

India /Andhra Pradesh /Krishna /Vijayawada

Undavalli Caves Near Prakasam Barrage, Vijayawada. Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Undavalli Caves, located 6 km south-west from Vijayawada, are the caves cut-out in the sandstone hill in the 4th to 5th centuries A.D. Of all the caves, the largest one comprises of four stories and is enshrined with a huge statue of Lord Vishnu. The statue of Lord Vishnu is sculpted in a reclining posture from a single block of granite. Besides, the other caves located at the site are dedicated to Lord Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. One of the main caves depicts the Gupta architecture, as these caves initially were shaped as a Buddhist monastery. These Buddhist monasteries were designed in the style of Buddhist vihara on the first floor. Dedicated to Anantapadmanabha Swamy and Narisimha Swamy, these caves are also associated with the Vishnukundina Kings of 420 to 620 A.D. These caves overlook the Krishna River and several specimens of rock cut Hindu architecture from above the hill.

Undavalli Caves, Vijayawada

HistoryEdit

Undavalli Caves are associated with Vishnukundina kings – influential dynasty ruling over significant part of contemporary India in 420 – 620 AD. Caves were dedicated by local governor Madhava Reddy to the Anantapadmanabha Swamy and Narisimha Swamy temples. First Vishnukundina kings were supporters of Buddhism and Undavalli Caves were started as Buddhist temples. For a while they were used by Buddhist monks and there have been preserved some Buddhist statues up to this day. Later though caves were taken over by Hindus and major part of artwork we see here today is related to Hindu religion. There is exciting legend about the cave – it tells that here starts 9 kilometres long underground passage leading to the sacred Mangalgiri mountain. Many locals believe in its existence and consider that the entrances have been closed and hidden by authorities to avoid accidents.

Prakasam Barrage

India /Andhra Pradesh /Krishna /Vijayawada

Prakasam Barrage, Krishna and Guntur Districts , Near Undavalli Caves, Vijayawada. Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Prakasam Barrage is built across the Krishna River and is located at the outskirts of Vijayawada in Krishna District. This modern regulator and road bridge stretches across the Krishna River and is named after the first Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Sri Tanguturi Prakasam. Prakasam Barrage is one of the earliest irrigation projects of south India and the scheme has transformed Krishna delta into the granary of Andhra Pradesh. Andhra Pradesh largely owes its richness in agriculture to the Prakasam Barrage as the project has helped in the irrigation of huge agricultural lands. The barrage provides gorgeous view with the shimmering lake. The balmy breeze and the placid waters make it one of the major travel attractions in Vijayawada. It is the largest in the asian continent. The water is used for drinking, irrigation and transport. From the tourist’s point of view, the tall barrage presents the city in a capsule. Drive onto it for the unbeatable wide angle view of Vijayawada.

Prakasam Barrage, Vijayawada

Prakasam Barrage, Vijayawada

HistoryEdit

The Prakasam Barrage doubles up as a road bridge, and the last three canals of the barrage pass through Vijayawada. The dam over the river came about from an idea that originated in the year 1798 in the mind of Captain Buckle, before being reinforced by Captain Best and Captain Lake in the year 1839 and 1841 respectively. Following the approval by Major Cotton, the dam was further given a green signal by the board of Directors of East India Company on January 5, 1850. The construction started in the year 1852 and was completed three years later in 1855. The bridge was built later on and named after Sri Tanguturi Prakasam, the first Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. The dam irrigates over 1.2 Million acres of land, and is the first major irrigation project of South India.Besides irrigating vast tracts of farmland, the dam provides a spectacular view of the lake and has become a major tourist attraction of Vijayawada.
Prakasam Barrage is 1223.5 m long and was completed in the year 1957. The barrage across the Krishna, first built by “Sir Arthur Cotton” more than a hundred years ago and later reconstructed in the 1950s, had been in a state of disrepair since the construction of the Vijayawada Thermal Power Station (VTPS) in 1979, as water level up to a minimum of 17.42 metres has to be maintained to facilitate the passage of water into the cooling canal which carries water to the thermal plant at Ibrahimpatnam. As VTPS with a capacity of 1,260 MWs (six units of 210 MWs each) is one of the major sources of power to the power-starved State, the barrage could not be depleted for the past 22 years. Made in 1855, the barrage on the Krishna regulates the water levels trapped between the city and the series of hills around it.

Amaravati Amareswara (Shiva) temple is 46 km form Vijayawada. Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Amaravati, famous for its Amareswara temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, is a small town situated on the banks of the River Krishna in the Guntur District. Popularly known as Dhanyakataka/Dharanikota, Amaravati was the site of a great Buddhist Stupa built in pre-Mauryan time. One of the major attractions of this holy place is Mahachaitya Stupa, which was formed during the reign of King Ashoka. This brick stupa includes platforms with 95 ft high cardinals and circular vedika. Another prominent attraction of Amaravati is an ancient temple, which houses a deity called Amreswara. This temple is also enshrined with a lingam, which attracts several visitors from all parts of South India.

HistoryEdit

The recorded history of Amaravati and nearby Dharanikota dates to 2nd century BCE. It was the capital of Satavahanas who ruled from 2nd century BCE to 3rd century CE. After the decline of Satavahanas, Andhra Ikshvakus and later Pallava kings ruled Krishna river valley. Subsequently, Eastern Chalukyas and Telugu Cholas held sway over the region. Kota Kings were in control of Amaravati during the medieval times. Kota kings were subdued by Kakatiyas in 11th century CE and Amaravati became part of the unified Telugu empire. The Skanda Purana gives a picture of the place and the Siva temple located here. According to Vajrayana traditional sources the Buddha preached at Dharanikota/Dhanyakatakam and conducted Kalachakra ceremony, which would take the antiquity of Amaravati back to 500 BCE. Taranatha, the Buddhist monk writes: “On the full moon of the month Caitra in the year following his enlightenment, at the great stupa of Dhanyakataka, Buddha emanated the mandala of “The Glorious Lunar Mansions” (Kalachakra). This shows that Dhanyakatakam (Amaravati) was a very important place at the time of composition of this tantra.
