Gagan Mahal, Bijapur. Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Gagan Mahal, Karnataka was originally the queen’s chambers and signs of that still exist. Named for the view of the sky that it provided, Gagan Mahal is an exquisite building with small yet beautifully decorated balconies, windows and intricate carvings. Pipes laid out in the palace carried water and cooled the chambers during the hot summer months. A bathing pool with a functional drainage system speaks volumes of the advanced scientific thought of those days. Unfortunately, time has not been kind to this palace and most of it now lies in ruins.

HistoryEdit

Gagan Mahal, built by Ali Adil Shah I of Adil Shahi Dynasty in 1561, forms a part of the famous Citadel. It is used as a palace-cum-audience hall. The central arch of Gagan Mahal is the tallest and widest among all the arches found in Bijapur. Mostly in ruins, the structure is now part of a beautiful park, which is situated around 1.9 km away from Bijapur District. It was the royal residence and darbar hall of Ali Adil Shah I. The palace is situated on the top floor, while the Durbar Hall is located on the ground floor. This hall resembles an opera stage set. It is completely open on one side so that the audience can avail an unobstructed view of the proceedings from outside the hall. The Mahal and nearby palaces form the royal centre of Bijapur, and are surrounded by a moat and Citadel walls.

Gol Gumbaz or Gol Gumbad,

India /Karnataka /Bijapur /Bijapur

Gol Gumbaz, Jadar Galli, Bijapur. Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Gol Gumbaz or Gol Gumbad, in Bijapur is the second largest dome in the world. The Gol Gumbad is second in size only to St. Peter’s Basilica, Rome. The Gol Gumbad is 124 feet in diameter. The architecture of Gol Gumbad is unique in the sense that the four minarets themselves are the staircases, leading to the top dome. Gol Gumbad is truly an amazing architectural wonder as the dome stands unsupported by pillars. The most fascinating and remarkable feature of the Gol Gumbad is its acoustical system. Even the faintest whisper around the dome echoes several times. The gallery around the dome of the Gol Gumbad provides a wonderful view of the town. The most striking features of Gol Gumbad are the seven-storied octagonal spires at the four corners and the heavy bracketed cornice below the ramparts. The gigantic Gol Gumbad dominates the landscape of Bijapur for miles around. The Gol Gumbad or Gol Gumbaz has a floor area of 1700 sq., height of 51 m. and a diameter of 37 m. The walls of the mausoleum are 3 m. thick. The dome contains tombs of Muhammad Adil Shah, his two wives, his mistress, his daughter and grandson. The structure in front of the tomb has been converted in to a museum. Other prominent structures in the Gol Gumbad complex are a mosque, a Naqqar Khana, a gateway and a dharmashala.

The Citadel Near Gagan Mahal, Bijapur. Edit

Detail InformationEdit

The Citadel in Bijapur is surrounded by a wall. The Citadel in Bijapur in Karnataka encompasses many palaces, halls and gardens which belonged to the Adil Shahi rulers. The Citadel, Bijapur is in a state of ruin but still holds the magnificence with a strong appeal. The remains of Hindu temples in the Citadel in Bijapur prove the fact that the city bore a great importance during the pre-Islam times. The remains of the Gagan Mahal, which was built in 1561, in the Citadel is worth seeing. Gagan Mahal was the royal palace. The Sat Manzil is the ruins of the seven stories palace of Mohammed Adil Shah. The Jala Manzil famous as the Water Pavilion and the Bara Kaman, which is the Twelve Arches, are among the important spots The fort in Bijapur was constructed in 1565, on the site of an earlier citadel called the Ark Killa. Up a small flight of steep steps is the famous Malik-i- Maidan (Monarch of the Plain), the most famous gun hereabouts. The gun stands on a low platform, ringed by iron hoops, atop the Sherj Burj or Lion Bastion, so called because of the lions carved on its entrance. Nearby is the Upari Burj (or Haider Burj) built in 1583. One can view the entire citadel from this tower. Once a Hall of Justice in the 17th century, the Adalat Mahal is situated on the outer edge of the citadel. Behind the Adalat Mahal is a magnificent arch, the Pasari Kaman that connects with the citadel. Built by Ibrahim II in 1589, Anand Mahal was meant to be a pleasure palace. Ferishta, the historian who made Bijapur his home in the 16th century, describes the grandeur of Ibrahim’s arrival in the newly constructed palace. Across the street lies the Gagan Mahal, the Durbar Hall built by Ali Adil Shah I in 1561. Within the citadel is the Saat Manzil, at the corner of a quadrangle called the Granary. In front of the Saat Manzil is an exquisite structure, the Jal Mandir, rising like a lotus from a stagnant pond.
