Detail InformationEdit

Hampi Bazaar was once not only a bustling, thriving marketplace of the Vijayanagra empire, but also where high ranking nobles resided. Today, much of the old structures have been transformed to shops, hotels and restaurants- a skeletal version of its former glitzy self. As you walk its narrow path with Virupaksha temple in the near distance, you can picture queens, royalty and residents buying wares, apparels, spices, pottery, livestock etc from the local, Arab, European and Portuguese merchants who frequented Hampi, lured by its grandeur. There’s a fascinating photo gallery in the market where photographs of Hampi taken in 1856 by Alexander Greenlaw are on display. The usually sleepy bazaar becomes spirited and vivacious during the Hampi annual festival, Hampi Utsav, held in November. Hampi Bazaar is always the hotbed of all festive happenings that take place in Hampi, be it religious, cultural or temple festivals.

HistoryEdit

Virupaksha Temple has ancient inscriptions which date back to 9th and 10th centuries. Originally it was a small shrine, and the sanctuary of Virupaksha–Pampa existed prior to the commencement of the Vijayanagara Empire. However, the Vijayanagara rulers were responsible for building this small shrine into a large temple complex. Although most of the temple buildings were constructed during the Vijayanagara rule, some few were also erected during the late Hoysala and Chalukya empires. Major renovations and additions were carried out in the 19th century and gopuras were established and ceilings painted during this time.

HistoryEdit

Elephant Stables in Hampi are sure to bring back to memory fantastic wars fought between seemingly invincible dynasties as kings faced each other atop elephants. Incredible domed structures, fitting for the majestic, royal beings that were housed here, Elephant stables is a row of 11 chambers with the one in the center, distinct with its temple-style tower, grander than the 5 on its either sides. Bearing a faded and slightly decrepit appearance the stables still stand as firmly as when they were in use, housing the royal Elephants. Inside the chambers, on the roof are metal hooks used in tying the Elephants and towards the rear of each chamber are small openings, possibly used by the mahouts to enter the chambers.

Lotus Palace, Hampi is a situated in close proximity to the Hazara Rama Temple. Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Lotus Mahal also known as Chitrangini Temple, an incredible blend of Hindu-Islamic architecture. This is the primary attraction of the Zenana Enclosure. Surrounded by walls and four watch towers in each corner, Lotus Mahal’s base begins with traditional Vijaynagara architectural pattern but as your gaze moves upward to its superstructure, you will find atypical pyramidal towers that more representative of Islamic architecture.

HistoryEdit

It is also believed that the Mahal or Palace was air-cooled and maintained its temperature during summer. The proof of this can be seen in the pipeline work above and between the arches. The entire monument is surrounded by a fortifying wall which is rectangular in plan. The four corners of the fortifications have watch towers that would have been used to keep an eye on the intruders into the Womens’ chambers. While it was a very popular practice to have Eunuchs hold guards at Queens’ Palaces in the North India, especially during Moghul rule, the existence of such a practice has not come to light in the Vijayanagara kingdom and era.

Queen’s Bath, Hampi

India /Karnataka /Bellary /Hampi

Queen’s Bath is located at Royal Enclosure, Hampi, Hospet, Karnataka. Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Queen’s bath, the private bathing chamber of Vijayanagara kings and queens that makes today’s whirlpool bathtubs and hot tub spas appear less lavish and self-indulgent. A massive verandah runs around a big open rectangular pool with a number of balconies projecting into it. Each balcony has three charming windows and the pool has a depth of 6 feet. Though called Queen’s bath, the pool was in all probability used by both, kings and queens. Encircled with a beautiful verandah replete with jutting balconies and carved domes, the pool has no ceiling. A water canal encircles the Queen’s bath and at some points bridges have been laid over it. It was possibly meant to act as a deterrent for anyone from entering the bath when it was in use. Today a blooming garden has been laid out front and is a popular picnicking site.

HistoryEdit

Displayed in this museum are the pre and protohistoric antiquities, narrative lime stone Buddhist panels of circa 2nd century AD, exquisite schist stone sculptures of 12th century AD, austere Jaina Tirthankaras from Parshwanatha Chaityala, elegant Shaiva and Vaishnava sculptures of Vijayanagara period. The sculpture of goddess Bhuvaneshvari from the vicinity of the palace of Vira Harihara is one of the early Vijayanagara sculptures here. The pillar inscription referring to the palace, day to day utilitarian pottery with deluxe porcelain ware, metal objects, miniature figurines and a few selected stucco figures add to the display. However the photo documentation of this glorious world heritage site done way back in 1856 by Alexander Green Law (1818-1873) in comparison with recent photographs gives an insight into the grandeur of the Vijayanagara monuments.
