Burma Bazaar is a market run by Burmese refugees in Chennai, India. It is located at Parrys Corner. The bazaar was set up in 1969 by the Government of Tamil Nadu. It is a row of about 200 shops that line either side of the road for about a kilometre.

Burma Bazaar was established by Burmese immigrants, who were Tamil refugees who fled Myanmar during the early 1960s. The government set aside land for the Tamil refugees returning from Burma during the 1960s. The bazaar is run by the Burma Tamizhar Marumalarchi Sangam, an association that has been set up to look after the interests of the traders since 1966.

Birla Planetarium Built in memory of B.M.Birla, the well known industrialist and visionary, the Planetarium is considered to be the most modern in the country. It houses eight galleries – Physical Science, Electronics and Communication, Energy, Life Science, Innovation, Transport, International Dolls and Children and Materials Science. The Planetarium has a 236-seater hemispherical theatre which houses a computerised project to depict the skies and heavenly bodies on a hemispherical dome. This centrally air-conditioned complex also houses a sound studio, classroom and seminar hall. Adjoining the planetarium is the Periyar Science and Technology Museum which will be of interest to students and other science scholars. The Planetarium regularly conducts shows and there are seminars and workshops on astronomy which are held from time to time. It is located at Kotturpuram near Adyar.

Ayya Vaikundar Nizhal Thangal, temples without any distinction of caste or creed, is based on Ayyavazhi, proclaimed by Ayya Vailkunder. This is controlled by Swamithoppe in Nagarcoil. There are no idols or priests. The only things present are a saffron cloth spread over a chair with a rudraksha chain placed over it. A mirror is hung on the wall behind the chair. These objects serve as the symbol of the almighty. This Nizhal Thangal in Chennai serve as community center, with facilities to cook for large crowds of people and also serve as schools for the community.

And though, it is known as the ‘Mecca of Christians’ people of all different castes crowd in the feet of the Virgin Mary to receive her blessings. The sight of Velankanni church is stunning with its sky-reaching towers. There is an interesting tradition, which the believers of the Lady of Health follow. The person who is diseased offers his body part in the form of candle to Mother Mary. Like, if a person has some problem in heart then he will present heart in the shape of a candle and if a person has some problem in liver then he will present the same form in wax. And when the diseased person is healed, they offer the healed body parts made up either of gold or silver. The Kapaleeshwarar temple is of typical Dravidian architectural style and an excellent example of the vishwakarmas sthapathis as also seen in the Ekambareswarar temple. There are two entrances to the temple marked by the gopuram on either side. The east gopuram is about 40-m high, while the smaller western gopuram faces the tank. Kapaleeshwarar Temple is a temple of Shiva located in Mylapore, Chennai in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The form of Shiva’s wife Parvati worshipped at this temple is called Karpagambal .

It is believed that the original Kapaleeshwarar Temple was built around the 7th century CE in Dravidian architecture by the Pallava rulers. The temple was probably at the location of present-day Santhome Church, but was destroyed by the Portuguese. The present temple was built 300-400 years ago by the Vijayanagar ruler, who based the architecture on the descriptions in the Puranams and the Thevaram.

Valluvar Kottam is like a temple chariot (39 m high), inside which there is a huge stone effigy of the saint Thiruvalluvar. The architect under whose guidance the Valluvar Kottam was built is a South Indian architect, V. Ganapati Sthapati, who is also the architect of the statue of saint Thiruvalluvar, sited at Kanyakumari. The main auditorium of the Valluvar Kottam can provide accommodation to more than 4,000 people at one time and stands as a contemporary cenotaph to the great and distinguished poet and saint, who symbolizes the splendid culture of the Tamils. A very unique feature of the Valluvar Kottam is that it stands baseless, without the support of any pillar. The 1330 verses of the epic Thirukkural are engraved on the granite columns in the facade hall corridors, enclosing the vast auditorium of the Valluvar Kottam. In the construction of this, about 3000 blocks of stone were used. The lion on the main gateway of the Kottam is very remarkable which decorated with attractive designs. The contribution of saint Thiruvalluvar in the Tamil Literature is very notable and admiring, visible through the affection returned to him by his fans through construction of this remarkable monument.

The Valluvar Kottam, is one such historical monument which is dedicated to the well-known intellectual poet, philosopher and saint, Thiruvalluvar, who penned his well-known Thirukkural more than 2,000 years ago. All the 133 chapters of the Thirukkural comprise of 1330 verses. It was built by M. Karunanidhi, the then Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, dating back to 1975 – 1976. It stands on the place of a lake which was then used as a dumping ground for the garbage of the entire city. Later on, however, the land was reformed and was used to build the Valluvar Kottam. The construction of Valluvar Kottam was the finest way to pay homage to this great and renowned personality as well his tremendous collection of magnificent works. This is one of the significant sites located in Chennai and is visited by a large number of visitors, every year, from all over the world. In the cultural life of the Tamils, saint Thiruvalluvar has great significance.
