Singba Rhodendron Sanctury (Area – 43 sq. km and Alt 3048 – 4575 mts.) is bounded on its southern periphery by the Yumthang Valley known for its alpine meadow and hot springs. It is hemmed in on the east by high rugged Chuba – Sagochen mountain ranges and on the west by part of Chomzomei Tso extending up to Lava pass. The picturesque Yumthang River flows through the sanctuary, which is known for its unique abundance of Rhododendron trees and shrubs, 40 species of which are recorded from Sikkim alone, that ablaze in color during March – May. Rhododendron nevium-the state tree occurs through the sanctuary, which is also rich in ground flora such as primulas, potentillas, gentians, larch, juniper, maple with trailing lichens. They also abounds in silver fir, spruce, dense carpet of moss protecting the soil and its inhabitants from the chhu at Phunyi in 1978 and have been flourishing since. Lachung is the last frontier village before reaching the sanctuary. Facilities include Angling in Phuniya Chhu and Yumthang Chhu from April to Spetember.

Tashiding monastery literally meaning “The Devoted Central Glory”, is surrounded by prayer flags that flutter in the air. There are many chortens dedicated to some Chogyals and alternative spiritual personalities of Sikkim. Buddhist mantras are skilfully graven on stone plates surrounding the monastery by the master craftsman Yanchong. The sacred ceremony of Bumchu, a Buddhist festival celebrated to predict the future, is held here at midnight on the 14th & 15th of the first Tibetan month. The festival, which is joined by associate ancient legend to Guru Padmasambhava, is about a divine vase stuffed with holy water unbroken in the monastery, which remains open for public display and worship every year on the night before the total Moon day in the 1st month of Tibetan calendar.

Tashiding Monastery, Gangtok

Tashiding Monastery is a Buddhist monastery. Dating back to 1641, the monastery is perched on the top of the hill located between the Rangit River and Rathong River. The monastery was founded by Ngadak Sempa Chempo Phunshok Rigzing, who belonged to Nyingma sect. However, in 1717, this monastery was renovated and extended during the reign by third Chogyal Chakdor Namgyal. In addition, the monastery is constructed on the site, which is believed to be blessed by the great Guru Padmasambhava. According to a legend, it is said that Guru Padmasambhava shot an arrow in the air so as to select the place for his meditation. The site where the arrow stroked became the place of Tashiding Monastery.

Since it’s relatively a new religious residence and does not have much historical or strategic significance like Rumtek religious residence. Saramsa Garden is a large stretch of landscaped garden. It’s ideal for leisure, recreation and picnic. And after all it is a favorite for romantic couples. The forest manager Rai Saheb Bhim Bahadur Pradhan introduced many fruit trees here as well as orange, banana, guava, litchi and pineapple. The garden became a serious fruit garden and the apply of growing fruits. this can be when the forest department introduced a medicative plant within the garden known as Cephaelis Ipecacuanha. The plant was foreign from Malaysia and used for manufacturing Emetine, a robust alkaloid that is of great significance in medical research. Since then the Garden is also known as the Ipeca Garden, named after the medicative plant.

HistoryEdit

Saramsa Garden was established in 1922. The place was opened by the Forest Department, which was managed by the Forest Manager, Bhim Bahadur Pradhan from 1922 to 1954. Besides being the forester, owing to immense interest in botany, floriculture and horticulture, he was able to manage the garden well. Initially, the main purpose behind the establishment of this garden was to grow different fruits like pineapple, guava and varieties of oranges and litchie. This was done for the residence of the former British political officer and the Palace. During this time, a famous local variety of banana known as “Chini Champa” was also grown in this garden. In addition, every week, Dati, which is a decorated basket laden with fruits, was sent to British Residency and the Palace.
