Sharavathi Wildlife Sanctuary covers the Sharavathi Valley Region, near the western border of Karnataka. It is spread over an area of 431 Kms.he forest is home to a variety of mammals, birds and reptiles. The sanctuary is a refuge of the endangered Lion-tailed macaque. Other mammals include tiger, leopard (black panther), wild dog, jackal, sloth bear, spotted deer, sambar, barking deer, mouse deer, wild pig, common langur, bonnet macaque, Malabar giant squirrel, giant flying squirrel, porcupine, otter and pangolin.The altitude in the sanctuary varies from 94 to 1102 mts, the highest point being Devarakonda on the southern edge of the sanctuary. Temperatures range from 15° to 38 °C and mean annual rainfall is 4500 mmThe sanctuary has mainly evergreen, semi-green and some moist deciduous forests.

Sri Ranganatha temple is one of the ancient temple of Shimoga district and has historical prominence. A holy cow named Surabhi use to milk the statue of Sri Ranganatha every day while it was sent to feed in the grass land. This was noticed when Surabhi stopped giving milk to its owner. The owner of the cow followed one day and they found out that the cow Surabhi was milking on the statue. The idol was cleaned up and a temple was constructed by a local gowda from halesorba at the bay of river Dandavathi. There is also a inscription written on the stone tower about the temple’s history.

Sri Ranganatha Temple is built on the same place where the holy cow used to milk and it is now Soraba’s famous Sri Ranganatha temple. Story says that the temple was built by a local Gowda (Landlord) from Halesoraba on the bay of river Dandavathi. We still have the manuscript written in Old Kannada script on the stone tower near – bay of river Dandavathi. Soraba is also nearest town to Banavasi other than Sirsi, Karnataka which was capital of Kadambas during 9th century.

Sri Rameshwara Temple is the main Hindu temple of Thirthahalli. This temple is made of stone and is on the banks of the river Tunga. It is near Parashurama Thirtha. The sanctum sanctorum of the temple has a Lingam which is said to have been installed by Sage Parashurama himself. The day when Parashurama cleansed his axe to remove the sesame-sized blood stain, the New Moon Day of the month of Margashira in the Hindu calendar, is termed Yellu Amavasya; Yellu meaning sesame and Amavasya meaning New Moon day, and Thirthahalli has an annual festival, Yellu Amavasya Jatre to celebrate this.The three days out of the five-day festival which are of particular interest to the public are Yellu Amavasya, when Utsava Moorthi, the main idol of Lord Sri Rameshwara is taken to the river to be consecrated.

Tripurantaka temple is an ancient temple situated on the north-east of the Balligave town. The temple’s main deity is Tripurantaka, a form of lord Shiva. The kings of the Western Chalukya dynasty worshiped Shiva, the Hindu God. Hence, they built many temples dedicated to lord Shiva. This temple is one among them. Additionally, they were tolerant towards Vaishnava or Jain faith also. Accordingly, one can find the sculptures of other Hindu Gods Brahma and Vishnu along with Shiva above the shrine’s entrance. The temple represents the architectural style of Chalukyas. The pillars and door frames bear a resemblance to the earliest works at Belur and Halebid. Additionally there are erotic sculptures on the friezes of the temple’s exterior wall.

The large temple complex houses three temples dedicated to Rameshwara (Lord Shiva), Veerabhadreshwara (warrior form of Lord Shiva) and Parvati Devi (consort of Lord Shiva). The central shrine is the one dedicated to Lord Shiva and so the temple is popularly known as Rameshwara Temple.The temple is cited on an elevated platform in the centre and a tall dwajasthamban is seen just outside the Veerabhadra temple. Balligavi was an important city during the 11th – 12th century Western Chalukya rule. The building material used is soapstonehe temple is protected as a monument of national importance by the Archaeological Survey of India. The temple is in trikuta style (three shrined, each with a superstructure or sikhara) with the shrines facing west, north and south. The western shrine has a vestibule where as the other two shrines have a “half hall”. It is the oldest example of such a combinational style in Karnataka according to reports from the Mysore archaeological department. The temple faces east and has a stepped entrance on three sides. The entrance on the sides is a Western Chalukya idiom. The entrance to the shrine which faces east has a Nandi, the bull and a celestial attendant of Shiva.

The architecture of Lakshmi Narasimha Temple built by the Hoysala rulers is marvelous and worth admiring. The Dwajasthambam of the temple stands tall in front of the temple, outside in the compound wall. Apart from this, there’s a stone pillar on a small pedestal. The temple has three Gopurams and hence called by the name Threekutachal Temple. The outer walls of the temple bear great detailed carvings in Hoysala style. A flight of five steps will lead you up the platform with three of them leading to the temple.

Lakshmi Narasimha temple was built by the Hoysala Dynasty in the 13th Century A.D. under the Hoysalas rule. This temple was built by Veera Narasimha, the grand son of Vishnuvardhana. It has murthis of Lord Srikrishna, Lord Purushottama, Lord Ganesha, Goddess Sharadamba along with lord Narasimha. It is built on Nakshtra Style platform.

Taxi : Taxies are available from Airport and Railway Station.

Bus : From Bangalore: All KSRTC buses that start from Bangalore to Shimoga stop here at Bhadravathi. The journey will be around six hours. From Shimoga: To reach Bhadravati from here, you can either book a taxi or take a KSRTC bus. Once you reach Bhadravati, you can take any mode of transport to reach the temple premises.

Train : The railway line from Birur-Bangalore passes through this city. Apart from this many trains from Bangalore to Shimoga also stop at Bhadravati. Another option would be to catch a train to Birur and switching over to a bus/ train heading to Bhadravati. Once you reach Bhadravati, you can take any mode of transport to reach the temple premises.

Air : Nearest Airport is Bengaluru International Airport (BLR) 340 km. Shimoga airport is under construction 6 km away from the city towards Bhadravathi in a village called soganne.
