River Nandini, Katil, Mangalore

India/Karnataka /Dakshina Kannada /Katil

Nandini River is about 8 miles away from Durga Parameshwari temple in Katil of Karnataka state, India. Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Nandini River has an interesting story attached to its origin. It is believed that the region of Katil was badly affected by a drought and it did not rain here for a long time. Jabali was a great sage, who wanted to help Katil’s people, so he requested Lord Indra to take Kamdhenu along with her for Yajna, but he denied and asked Jabali to take Nandini, the daughter of holy cow Kamdhenu. But she refused and appealed Goddess Durga to redeem her from curse. Goddess Durga promised her to be born as Nandini’s daughter in the middle of river and she would attain purification. Thus, Jabali did immolation and this way the deities were pleased and earth was happy once again. That is why the temple is situated in the middle of River Nandini and the place is known as Katil, which means centre area and the birthplace of river Nandini. The famous Durga Parameshwari temple is located on the banks of River Nandini. There is a beautiful fountain outside the temple with a statue of a woman holding kalash in her hand and pouring water into the river.

St. Mary’S Islands, Mangalore

India/Karnataka /Dakshina Kannada /Mangalore

St. Mary’s Island is located at a distance of 6 km from Udupi and 65 km north of Mangalore. Edit

Detail InformationEdit

The St. Mary’s Island beach is special for the unique formation of basalt rocks that have crystallized into whole columns and split into vertical hexagonal blocks. The west coast of these islands is a haven of shellfish with shells of various shapes and sizes littered along the coast. The island is 300 m long and 100 m wide and has a few palm trees. The four largest islands are named Coconut Island, South Island, North Island, and Daryabahadurgarh Island. These islands do not have a sandy beach due to the rocks along the shoreline. These islands are just rock projections arising out of the sea near Malpe. A large variety of seashells are found along the rocks. Benches have been installed near the shoreline for the benefit of tourists. Apart from coconut palms, there is very little shade. The quality of amenities for tourists is very poor. The traveller should go prepared for the searing sun with caps and bottles of drinking water.

St. Mary’S Islands, Mangalore

HistoryEdit

St Mary’s Islands were named “El Padron de Santa Maria” by the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama as a dedication to Mother Mary . Vasco da Gama is supposed to have landed on these islands in the course of his voyage to Calicut. Geological studies indicate that these islands were created at the time that Madagascar and Africa separated from India. The rocks are hexagonal in shape, columnar in form, and made of basalt. These rocks provide a convenient vantage point for tourists to catch a glimpse of Malpe harbour and the sunset over the Arabian Sea.

Shree Vishnumurthy Temple, Mangalore

India/Karnataka /Dakshina Kannada /Mangalore

Shree Vishnumurthy Temple is located in the town of Kulai near Surathkal about 15 km north of Mangalore in the state of Karnataka, India. Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Shree Vishnumurthy Temple is one of the ancient Vishnu Shrines in this part of Karnataka. The Main deity of this temple is Shree Vishnumurthy who is another form of Lord Mahavishnu. Since there is no hard and fast documents available regarding history of its origin, we could not have got any kind of legendary and chronological view in connection to the temple. However, as per the opinion of Shri Gururaj Bhatt, a well-known archeologist and historian in South Kanara, the age of the statue dates back to 600 years. Initially, there was no temple complex, but Mr. Venkatramana Hebbar, found a small shrine in ruining stage midst of shrubs and forest occupant, around 1911. He then constructed the shrine with the help of local residents and villagers. His son Shri Ramakrishna Hebbar also contributed to this holy task. Since then its renovation work was taken up step-by-step and still it is going on.

Sultan Battery, Mangalore

India/Karnataka /Dakshina Kannada /Mangalore

Sultan Battery watch tower is situated in Boloor, 4 km from Mangalore city. Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Sultan Battery is one of the most prominent places of interest in Mangalore. The importance of this place of the city is that it bears testimony of the historical events that have taken place at this place. The Sultan Battery of Mangalore is actually a watchtower, which is located at a place called Boloor. Sultan Battery at Mangalore is made up of special type of stones, which are termed ‘black stones’. Tippu Sultan constructed the Sultan Battery in Mangalore for some important contemporary political reasons. He wanted to stop the naval vessels from stepping into a river called the River Gurpur. For this reason, he constructed the massive structure of the Sultan Battery as a barrier for the naval vessels. The entire structure does not exist any more, though a portion of the fort is still preserved for the tourists, so that they can get a glimpse of this historic monument. The existing portion of the Sultan Battery is called Tippu’s Well. The place where this fort stands is today completely forsaken.
