Ajab Bangla Central Museum of Nagpur Locally known as the Ajab Bangla, this Central Museum of Nagpur boasts of a rare collection of antiquities, coins, ancient inscriptions, sculptures, inscriptions and pre-historic artifacts, some of which are belonging to the Indus Valley civilization. However, this store-house of natural and cultural heritage still largely remains unknown to the visiting tourists as well as to most residents of Nagpur City. Recently, this Central Museum has undergone major renovation Works which include provisions for gardens and a cafeteria. Ajab Bangla was originally established by the British in 1863 when Orange City was part of the Central Provinces. Along with history, this museum if featuring a good variety of flora and fauna of Central India comprising of a huge collection of stuffed animals and birds. With several important artifacts still locked within the reserve collection due to inadequacy of display facilities and galleries, this Central Museum in Nagpur is highly understaffed and trying to cope up with the rapidly changing social and cultural environment. Managed by the Directorate of Archaeology and Museums, Ajab Bangla has called in experts lately from Mumbai to restore and conserve well-known artifacts including a statue of Queen Victoria.

Shri Vyankatesh temple located on Dharaskar Road in Itwari, about 3kms from Nagpur city center is dedicated to Lord Vyankatesh (the manifestation of Lord Balaji or Lord Vishnu). The construction of the temple was started in 1963 and completed in 1968 under the guidance of Swamiji Shri Dharacharyaji. The temple houses a beautiful back stone idol of God Vyankatesh, adorned with gold ornaments and this idol had been brought from South India. Just below the main idol, there placed three festival statues of Lord Vyankatesh made out of gold by the skilled artist from Chennai. The main entrance gate of Shri Vyankatesh temple is bedecked with beautiful carvings of numerous Hindu Gods and Goddesses. The annual temple festival is celebrated for 3 days in the month of February which involves the ceremony of God’s wedding, special Abhishekam, Kalash Pooja and ShobhaYatra. Besides this festival, Ramanuja Jayanti, Ram Navmi, Krishna Janmashtami, Waman Jayanti, Narsingh Jayanti, etc. are also celebrated at Vyankatesh temple with great prompt.

Established under the leadership and the guidance of Swamiji Shri Dharacharyaji the construction of this temple commenced on 9th April 1963 which attained completion in 1968 AD. The sanctum of the Shri Vyankatesh Temple enshrines the enticing effigy of Lord Vyankatesh made of black stone and adorned with gold ornaments. In addition to that, three festival statues of Lord Vyankatesh made out of gold are also placed just below the chief idol of the presiding deity. These smaller figurines are specially made by the proficient artists from Chennai whereas the main idol of Lord Vyankatesh is believed to have brought all the way from South India. The main entrance of the temple garlanded with ornately carved figures of numerous Hindu Gods and Goddesses is also bedecked with burnished silver foil. The daily offerings performed at the temple include the special worship, Abhishekam, Rajbhog, mantra recitation, and so on. Vyankatesh Temple of Nagpur is noted for its ostentatious festivals like the Ramanuja Jayanti, Ram Navmi, Krishna Janmashtami, Waman Jayanti, Narsingh Jayanti, etc. Apart from that, the temple celebrates its 3 days long annual festival in the month of February which involves the ceremony of God’s wedding, special Abhishekam, Kalash Pooja and ShobhaYatra. On the special occasions and festival days, the Vyankatesh Temple is thronged by over 10,000 devotees. Sri Poddareshwar Ram Mandir (temple), situated on the Central Avenue Road (CA Road), just a few minutes walk from Nagpur railway station is dedicated to Lord Rama and Lord Shiva. Ram Mandir houses the images of Rama, Sita and Laxmana – three major characters of the Indian epic Ramayana. Built in 1923 by Late Shri Jamnadhar Poddar of the famous Poddar Family of Bisau (Rajasthan), Poddareshwar temple is described as the proud of Nagpur which is decorated with marble and sandstone carving works. People from all over India visits this temple on a belief that, those who visits this temple will absolutely gets the peace of mind. The main attraction of the temple is the Shobha Yatra (a grand parade) held every year on the occasion of Ramnavami. The Shobha Yatra is marked by a procession of a decorated chariot adorned with flowers and garlands with the idols of Rama, Sita and Laxmana. It is accompanied with the tableaus, depicting scenes from Ramayana and other Hindu granthas. Other added attraction of the procession is the ladies in colorful attires carrying mangal-kalash in the heads and the firework display. Large number of pilgrims gathered here to celebrate the Ramnavami festival with great delight. Within the temple premises, there is a Dharamshala (“Jamnadhar Poddar Dharamshala”) which provides free stay for the devotees. The temple and Dharmashala were administered by a board of trustees from the poddar family.

This 400 year old temple sprawl over an area of 18.288 x 6.096sq. m is surrounded by various small shrines of Hindu Gods. The entrance of Telankhedi Shiv Mandir is adorned with a magnificent structure of Nandi. The 1.06m tall lingam of the Lord Shiva is kept in the sanctum sanctorum at a 3.65 x 3.65 sq. m. platform. The Sri Balaji Karthikeyan Temple, one of the most revered temples in the city. The deities of the temple are Lord Balaji, Lord Kartikeya (Muruga, son of Lord Shiva). According to Hindu mythology, Lord Kartikeya is believed to be the commander-in-chief of the army of Hindu Gods. Built in peaceful and picturesque surroundings, Balaji Mandir is famous for its architectural beauty. The temple is built in a 3 tier pattern with Ekadala Vimana for Lord Balaji and Lord Muruga. The rajagopuram (main tower of the temple is 60 feet high. The 3 feet tall idol of Lord Muruga is housed in the upper sanctum sanctorum along with his consorts Valli and Deivanai and the 6 feet tall idol of Lord Balaji (Venkateswara) is in the lower sanctum sanctorum. At the entrance of Balaji Karthikeyan Temple, there is a very well maintained garden with various flowers and one can also found a well-maintained Tulsi garden inside the temple. Besides the shrines of the main deities, Balaji Karthikeyan temple also houses shrines of Shiva, Ganapathy, Hanuman, Durga, Shithala matha, Sarparaja, Maha Sastha and also for Navagrahas – the nine planets. Daily Puja along with Archana and Mahadeeparthana are the main rituals of the temple. The major two festivals celebrated in the temple are Brahmotsava for Lord Balaji and Skanda Shashti for Lord Kartikeya. The Raman Science Centre at Nagpur is an interactive science center affiliated with Mumbai’s Nehru Science Centre. The centre was developed to promote a scientific attitude, portray the growth of science and technology and their applications in industry and human welfare, and hold science exhibits. The centre is named after famous Nobel Prize winner Indian physicist Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman. The Raman Science Centre was inaugurated on 7 March 1992 and the planetarium was started on 5 January 1997. The centre is located opposite Gandhi Sagar Lake in the heart of Nagpur.Between April 1, 2006 and March 31, 2007 the centre recorded a visitor count of 307,074. The centre is part of the National Council of Science Museums (NCSM), India which is also the largest network of science centres/museums under a single administrative umbrella in the world.
