Tiger Point

India /Maharashtra /Pune /Lonavala

Sight Address : Tiger Point is situated on Amby Valley Road, Ahead of Bushy Dam, Lonavala, India. Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Tiger Point is also known as the Tiger’s Leap. It is named so because as you look carefully at this spot it appears as if a tiger is leaping on to the valley. Tiger’s Leap provides an engrossing view of the valley. However, view the valley from the safe confines of a big hole as it is situated on cliff-top with a sheer drop of over 650 m, giving an extensive view. Just around tiger’s leap, there is an small waterfall active only during the monsoon. It serves the purpose of relaxing in the water better than Bushy dam, as the force of the fall is higher. Also, after the brief steep descent, the fall becomes a stream with a fair amount of force to go all the way down to the base of the Tiger’s Leap. Tiger Point is so beautiful in the rainy season that you feel as if you are in heaven. The clouds sail by and you cannot see the person who is just ten steps ahead of you. People sat on the car roof to feel the heavenly bliss.

 Sinhagad Fort

Sinhagad Fort

HistoryEdit

Sinhagad fort has had quite a long history, It was called ‘Kondana’ after the sage Kaundinya. The Kaundinyeshwar temple, the caves and the carvings indicate that this fort had probably been built two thousand years back. It was captured from the Koli tribal chieftain, Nag Naik, by Muhammad bin Tughlaq in 1328 AD. Shahaji Bhosale, as the commander of Ibrahim Adil Shah 1, was entrusted with the control of the Pune region. His son Shivaji, however, refused to accept the Adilshahi and initiated the task of setting up Swarajya. He gained control of Kondana in 1647 by convincing Siddi Amber, the Adilshahi Sardar who controlled the fort. Bapuji Mudgal Deshpande played key role in this activity. In 1649, it had to be handed over to Adil Shah for Shahaji Maharaj’s release. Shivaji Maharaj recaptured it back in 1656 again with the help of Bapuji Mudgal Deshpande, who convinced Fort commander by giving land in newly created Shivapur village and peacefully gained control of fort. This Fort saw attacks of Mughals on 1662, 1663 and 1665. In 1664, Shahistekhan- mughal general even tried to bribe people of fort to hand over the fort to him but he was unsuccessful. In Purandar Pact it went into the hands of the Mughal army chief Mirzaraje Jaysingh, in the year 1665. In 1670, Shivaji Maharaj re-conquered this fort and then it stayed under Maratha rule till 1689. After the death of Sambhaji, the Mughals regained control over. Again in 1693 the Marathas recaptured it headed by Sardar Balkawade. Chatrapati Rajaram took asylum on this fort during Mogul raid on Satara but Rajaram died on Sinhagad on the 3rd of March 1700 & in 1703 Aurangzeb conquered the fort. In 1706, it once again went into the hands of the Marathas. Pantaji Shivdev of Sangola and the Pant Pratinidhis played key role in this battle. Then this fort remained with Marathas till 1818, when the British conquered it. British however took three months to capture this fort, which was longest it took them to win any fort in Maharastra.

Moreshwar Ganpati Mandir

India /Maharashtra /Pune /Morgao

Sight Address : Moreshwar Ganpati Mandir is located in Morgaon, about 80 kilometres (50 mile) away from Pune city . Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Shri Moreshwar Mandir is a Hindu temple dedicated to Ganesha, the elephant-headed god of wisdom. The Morgaon temple is the starting point of the pilgrimage of eight revered temples of Ganesha, around Pune. The temple circuit is known as Ashtavinayak (“Eight Ganeshas”). The pilgrimage is considered incomplete if the pilgrim does not visit the Morgaon temple at the end of the pilgrimage. The Morgaon temple is not only the most important temple in the Ashtavinayak circuit, but also is described as “India’s foremost Gaṇeśa (Ganesha) pilgrimage” (IAST original). Morgaon is the adhya pitha – foremost centre of worship of the Ganapatya sect, which considers Ganesha as the Supreme Being. It attracts the greatest number of pilgrims in the Ashtavinayak circuit. Both the primary scriptures of the Ganapatya sect praise Morgaon.

Moreshwar Ganpati Mandir

Moreshwar Ganpati Mandir

HistoryEdit

The Morgaon temple and other Ganapatya centres near Pune, enjoyed royal patronage from the Brahmin Peshwa rulers of the Maratha Empire during the 18th century. The Peshwas, who worshipped Ganesha as their kuladaivat donated in land and/or cash and/or made additions to these Ganesha temples. Morya Gosavi (Moroba), a prominent Ganapatya saint, worshipped at the Morgaon Ganesha temple before shifting to Chinchwad, where he established a new Ganesha temple.
According to Anne Feldhaus, the Morgaon temple does not pre-date the seventeenth century, when Morya Gosavi popularized it. However, even the dating of Morya Gosavi is disputed and varies from the 13th–14th century to the 17th century. The descendants of Morya Gosavi – who were worshipped as Ganesha incarnates at the Chinchwad temple – often visited the Morgaon temple and controlled the finances and administration of many Ashthavinayak temples.
