Large crowds of people come to this place to stride along the beautiful walkway and to view the stunning sight of the setting sun at dusk. The scenic beauty of the perfectly lined palm trees offers its visitors an enthralling experience. Marine Drive is also referred to as ‘Queen’s necklace’, because the street lights make the road look like a string of pearls and create an illusion of a necklace, when viewed at night from any elevated point along the pathway of the drive. Marine Drive, Mumbai

HistoryEdit

Marine Drive is the place where Mumbaites hang out to cool down a while from the steamy hurried and busied life. The cool breeze and the calmness of the sea cool down the exhausted lot. Marine Drive was built in 1920s and 1930s on land reclaimed from the sea. It is located at the heart of Mumbai. As street lamps orderly line up on the edge of the beach, it is also known as Queen’s Necklace. It has recently named Netaji Subhashchandra Bose Road. Chowpatty Beach is at the top end of the Marine Drive. Several Hindu religious ceremonies are taking place at Chowpatty like annual thread-tying ceremony, Nariel-Purnima and Ganesh Chaturthi immersions. Stalls on the beach, selling Bhelpuri, Kulfi and Paan make the Chowpatty zesty. Nana-Nani Park for elderly people has just opened recently near the beach. Mumbai has excellent transport and accommodation facilities. Most of the buildings which were built by wealthy Parsis sport an art deco look that was popular in the 1920s and 1930s. Miami in the United States is the only city in the world that has more art deco buildings along the seafront than Mumbai.Real estate prices along the esplanade are among the highest in India, and fourth in the world at US$2100 per square feet[citation needed]. A lot of celebrities live here, making it one of India’s premier residential community. Many hotels dot the drive, most prominent among them being the 5-star Oberoi (formerly the Oberoi Hilton Tower however reverted to the original name as of early 2008), The Intercontinental, Hotel Marine Plaza, Sea Green Hotel and a few other smaller hotels. Marine Drive is the preferred connecting road between the central business district located at Nariman Point and the rest of the city. Marine Drive is also known as the Queen’s Necklace because if viewed at night from an elevated point anywhere along the drive, the street lights resemble a string of pearls, forming a necklace. It is also the world’s largest viewing gallery and hence has been a host to a number of events that take place along the promenade. It is the major attraction in Mumbai city.It is a tourist place.

Elephanta Caves

India /Maharashtra /Mumbai City /Mumbai

Sight Address : Elephanta Caves is situated on Gharapuri or elephanta Islands 15 miles from the Gateway of India in Mumbai.Edit

Detail InformationEdit

These caves, which are declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are frequented by domestic and foreign travelers alike. The caves are said to be dating back to the period between the 9th to 13th century AD & are famous for its ancient sculptures and the temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. The prime deity in the temple is Ardhanarishwara, a blend of half man and half woman representing Shiva and Parvathy. The temple which is rock cut, is designed based on the Hindu astrological knowledge base, clearly taking into account the geometrical “Mandala” and energy levels. Wonderful sculptures at the Elephanta Caves, depicting the three faces of Trinity, Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwara , is a marvellous attraction here. All in all a must visit to take a glimpse into the countries rich history & heritage.

Elephanta Entrance

Elephanta Entrance

HistoryEdit

The Elephanta caves are “of unknown date and attribution”. Art historians have dated the caves in the range of late 5th to late 8th century AD. Archaeological excavations have unearthed a few Kshatrapa coins dated to 4th century AD. The known history is traced only to the defeat of Mauryan rulers of Konkan by the Badami Chalukyas emperor Pulakesi II (609–642) in a naval battle, in 635 AD. Elephanta was then called Puri or Purika, and served as the capital of the Konkan Mauryas. Some historians attribute the caves to the Konkan Mauryas, dating them to the mid 6th century, though others refute this claim saying a relatively small kingdom like the Konkan Mauryas could not undertake “an almost superhuman excavation effort,” which was needed to carve the rock temples from solid rock and could not have the skilled labour to produce such “high quality” sculpture. Though the main cave was restored in the 1970s, other caves, including three consisting of important sculptures, are still badly damaged.[7] The caves were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987 as per the cultural criteria of UNESCO: the caves “represent a masterpiece of human creative genius” and “bear a unique or at least exceptional testimony to a cultural tradition or to a civilization which is living or which has disappeared”.

  • Beware of the monkeys that roam around. They are quite used to the huge masses of people moving around. But they are not happy when kids and even pesky teenagers tease them by throwing stones or making wierd sounds. There have been many cases of people been scratched or attacked by monkeys, usually in retaliation. If left alone, they will usually do nothing. Try to be with the crowd, especially if you have got some packed food with you and want to have a picnic in the area.

Sight Address : Bimashankar is located in village of Bhorgiri, and 95 km from Pune. Edit

Detail InformationEdit

The Bhimashankara temple is a composite of old and the new structures and is built in the Nagara style of architecture. It is believed that the ancient shrine was erected over a Swayambhu Lingam (that is the self emanated Shiva Lingam). It can be seen in the temple that the Lingam is exactly at the centre of the floor of the Garbagriham (the Sanctum Sanctorum). Intricate carvings of divinities interspersed with human figurines adorn the pillars and the doorframes of the temple. Scenes from mythology find itself captured in these magnificent carvings. Within the temple precincts there is also a small shrine dedicated to Lord Shani Mahatma (also called Shaneeswara). The image of Nandi Lord Shiva’s vahanam is installed as is the case with all the Siva Temples, just at the entrance of the temple.
