The ISKCON Temple or the International Society for Krishna Consciousness is a famous temple situated in Mumbai. This temple, also known as the ‘Hare Rama Hare Krishna Temple’ and ‘Radha Rasabihariji’ is dedicated to ‘Lord Krishna’ and was built by the ISKCON Foundation. The temple complex is sited on the main ‘Hare Krishna Land’ that covers an area of over 4 acres. This temple was established by Swami Prabhupada in 1978 and is one of the forty ISKCON temples in India. Fabulously constructed, this temple is embellished with various paintings and statues within its interiors, making the temple look all the more mesmerizing. This gorgeous temple was constructed to honour Srila Parabhupada’s aim to spread ‘Krishna’ consciousness. The temple is an apt spot for meditation and prayers especially for people who seek to increase one’s spiritual knowledge and add on to their intellectual development. Walkeshwar temple, an ancient temple also known as Banganga Temple, is perfectly placed in the scenic surroundings of Malabar hills in South Mumbai. Walkeshwar Temple is dedicated to the main deity Lord Shiva and the legend relates the origin of this temple with Lord Rama and Sita. The temple is built during Silhara Dynasty in 1127 AD and the temple was destroyed during the Portuguese invasion. Later it was renovated by a group of devotees. The main feature of the temple is the Banganga, a water tank, which is enriched with fresh water all through the year. A number of small shrines dedicated to Hindu Gods and Goddesses are housed around the water tank. Many devotees throng to the temple during the full moon and Amavasya days.

Walkeshwar Temple

The temple and the attached fresh water Banganga Tank were built in 1127 AD by Lakshman Prabhu, a Gaud Saraswat Brahmin minister in the court of Silhara dynasty Kings who ruled Thane, and the islands of Mumbai during 810 to 1240 AD. The temple was destroyed by the Portuguese during their reign over Mumbai (Portuguese Bom Bahia) in the 16th century. It was rebuilt due to the generosity of Mumbai businessman and philanthropist, Rama Kamath, another Gaud Saraswat Brahmin (known in British records as ‘Kamati’) in 1715. The main temple has been substantially reconstructed and many smaller temples have come up around the Banganga Tank. By 1860, the temple started attracting greater crowds and 10 to 20 other temples had come up around it and 50 dharamshalas.

The Cathedral of St. Thomas is one of the most prestigious landmarks in the city of Mumbai. Built in 1718, the cathedral is a standing example and symbol of the early British settlement. The Cathedral was built in an effort to maintain and possibly improve the standards of the British settlement. The first Anglican Church in the city, St. Thomas Cathedral holds tremendous religious significance for the Christian population of Mumbai. The Cathedral is bedecked with exquisite embellishments and is a towering monument representing peace and solitude. This church was named after St. Thomas, who was one of the 12 Disciples of Christ and who was also the apostle to India. Most of the monuments inside the Cathedral are a witness to Bombay’s regal history, although the building is now slowly disintegrating in parts. Here, Holy Communion is held every Sunday at 8:40 AM. St Thomas’ Cathedral

HistoryEdit

The idea for the Cathedral of St. Thomas, named after the first apostle of India who came from Malabar, was initiated by Governor Aungier in 1676 AD. However, after his death, the project was abandoned. The construction for the church was already under-way and the construction stood halfway at 5 meters high for around half a century. In 1710, the East India Company Chaplain adopted this unfinished task and decided to make a magnificent Anglican structure in the honour of St. Thomas. After the completion of this grand edifice, this church was finally opened as the first Anglican Church in Mumbai on the day of Christmas in 1718 AD. In the 18th and 19th century, the Cathedral was divided on the basis of different classes of society. There was even a separate room for ‘Inferior Women’.

The Prince of Wales Museum, now commonly known as ‘Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya’, was established during the early 20th century. This museum is considered as a heritage structure in Mumbai because of its admirable architecture. The Prince of Wales Museum is one of the most significant museums in India. The museum showcases several collections of ancient artworks, sculptures and artefacts in its galleries. After the inception of the renovation project in 2008, many new galleries were opened, which contained artworks of Hindu God Krishna, textiles and Indian traditional costumes. Regular exhibitions and lectures on several topics are also held inside the museum. The Prince of Wales Museum was originally a building that was used as a military hospital for the Children’s Welfare Exhibitions. Tourists from the world all over, make it a point to visit this magnificent heritage building and to explore the various ancient artefacts preserved within this museum.

The Prince of Wales Museum was built in order to honour and commemorate the visit of King George V to India. Although the idea for a museum was initiated in 1904, the foundation stone was laid down by the Prince of Wales in 1905. In 1907, the government of Bombay (Mumbai) Presidency granted the museum committee a strip of land called the ‘Crescent Site’. The Prince of Wales Museum was designed by a prominent architect, George Wittet and was erected on this site in 1915. Initially the museum was used as a military hospital and a ‘Children’s Welfare Center’ during the ‘First World War’. The museum was inaugurated in 1922.

Ballard.Port development was undertaken by the civil engineering partnership Sir John Wolfe-Barry and Lt Col Arthur John Barry as Joint Consulting Engineers to the Bombay Port Trust at the end of the nineteenth century.From its establishment, the port has been the gateway to India, and was a primary factor in the emergence of Mumbai as the commercial capital of India. The port and the corporation took their present names in the 1990s.Over the decades, the port underwent tremendous expansion, with the addition of berths and cargo handling capacities. However, Mumbai’s expanding growth and population pressure constrained the growth of the port by the 1970s. This led to the establishment of the Nhava Sheva port across Mumbai Harbour in Navi Mumbai on the Konkan mainland. It was laid out in 1861 and is one of the oldest zoos in India. Also, situated in the Gardens is the Bhau Daji Lad Museum (formerly Victoria and Albert Museum), mainly of industrial and agricultural interest. On the grounds to the east of the museum is the giant statue of an elephant, taken from the Elephanta Caves on Gharapuri to Britain in 1864, and later returned to these gardens.The gardens are spread over 48 acres (19 ha) in Byculla, on the central side of Mumbai, surrounded by low income housing colonies or “chawls”. Located in Colaba in Southern Mumbai, the building was initially a concert venue, which was later made into an art gallery in 1954. The organisation, which has branches in Bangalore and New Delhi, boasts of art works from artists from India and all over the world including Gaganendranath Tagore, M.F. Hussain, F.N. Souza, Amrita Sher-Gil to Picasso and Egyptian artefacts. Moreover, National Gallery of Modern Art also conducts exhibitions incorporating Indian as well as foreign artists. The gallery that houses some of the oldest works which dates back to 1857 is one of the best in India. Sir C. J hall, which was its initial name, was transformed into National Gallery of Modern Art, Mumbai. However, in the sixties, the place was a venue for concerts and other art activities but, it faced a phase of decline due to misuse. Following the protest of eminent artists and sculptors such as Piloo Pochkhanawala and Kekoo Gandhy, an attempt was made to introduce a floor space along the lines of London’s Royal Albert Hall and this came out to be successful. After 12 years of renovation, the art gallery could now boasts of a new exhibition space which meets international standards for lighting, humidity and temperature control. The building has five exhibition galleries, lecture auditorium, library, cafeteria, storage and office space for permanent collection and travelling shows. The Haji Ali Dargah is a historical landmark in Mumbai, and is also one of the most prestigious Islamic symbols situated in South Mumbai. The Haji Ali was built by a wealthy Muslim merchant who became a saint named Haji Ali Shah Bukhari. He renounced all worldly pleasures before embarking on a pilgrimage to Mecca. The Haji Ali Dargah was built in his honor in 1431 AD. The whitewashed structure is situated in an area of 4,500 meters and is flanked by crisp, marble pillars that are still marvelled at today. This 400-year-old structure that stands in Mumbai today has degenerated and corroded in many places and the structural up-gradation of this marvellous structure began in 2008. People from all over the world visit the Haji Ali Dargah irrespective of caste, religion and creed. The Haji Ali Dargah is a popular pilgrimage site today and most tourists visit the tomb of Pir Haji Ali Shah Bukhari to seek his blessings for wealth, health, marriage etc. On special occasions such as the death anniversary of the saint or Eid-ul-Fir, special events or programs are organized at the Haji Ali Dargah in Mumbai.

The Haji Ali Dargah was built by a wealthy merchant known as Haji Ali Shah Bukhari who decided to renounce all worldly possessions and turned into a saint just before going for a pilgrimage to Mecca. The mosque (Masjid) inside the complex and the Dargah were built in 1431 AD. It is believed that on the way to Mecca, Haji Ali perished and the casket that carried his body floated back to the ‘Dargah’ on its own. However, another legend states that Haji Ali drowned at the point where the Dargah now stands today. Since then, the monument has been a custodian of the shores of Mumbai.

Five Gardens

There were no demarcations to begin with years and years ago, there were just Five Gardens,” said Zareen Engineer, founder of the Mancherji Edulji Joshi Residents’ Association. Engineer is the granddaughter of Mancherji Joshi, who helped build the neighbourhood in the 1920s. The area is part of the first planned suburbs laid out by the Bombay Improvement Trust in the wake of the 1896 plague. Mindful of the congested conditions that helped spread the disease, the Trust designed the area with wide roads, proper drains and green spaces. In recent years, the residents’ association has managed to dissuade the BMC from building a walkover, gazebos and a food court here. The BMC recently installed R55,000-lamp posts in Five Gardens, said Engineer, but hasn’t done much for the 45-odd gardens that dot the rest of the ward.

Bus : BEST bus services are second most extensive intra city transport system. Mumbai has an excellent road transportation system. State owned buses connect Mumbai to all neighbouring points. Many Deluxe and Super Deluxe buses are available to travel in and out of the city. Bus fare is about Rs 3 to 4 per kilometer.

Train : Mumbai is the headquarters of Indian railway system. Chhatrapati Shivaji Railway Station is the major one which connects all most parts of Indian cities to Mumbai. Other railway stations in Mumbai are Dadar and Kurla, and Churchgate. Suburban railway is the backbone of the transport system. Three main railway lines connect most of the city. Trains are always on time and economical, however they might be crowded in peak hours. The basic fare may range from 5 INR to 100 INR. The trains run from 4 am to 1pm, and there are trains arriving at the station every five minutes. It is also advisable to take care of valuables even in the first class section. Rush hour constitutes office timings from 8 am to 11 am and 5 pm to 7pm. The traveller should avoid the rush hour. Women travellers can make use of the separate women compartments and they might be less crowded than the general compartments.

Others : Auto richshaws: The auto rickshaws of Mumbai are the most common means of transport and are cheap also. they charge Rs 9 for the first 1.6 km and Rs 5 for km covered afterwards. The night charge is 25% more of the total charge. However, one needs to be careful as these auto rickshaws use longer routes in order to increase their fare amount.
