This unique museum envisages documenting and preserving the monetary heritage of India. It has three galleries on the concepts, ideas and curiosities related to money. You can find a great old coins collection from gold, silver, bronze and more, since Fifth century BC till date, at the RBI Monetary Museum. Since 2004, this beautiful and clean museum has done its best to maintain and display rare coins. It also has 8mm diameter coins called ‘Fanam’. It is one of the only monetary heritages under RBI which is yet to be seen by most people. The Museum is divided into Six Sections: Concepts, Curiosities & the Idea of Money: This section provides the definition of money and gives information on its evolution. It talks about the Barter system and also displays all the items that were used as commodity money including cowri shells, Neolithic stone, axes, silver bar money, knife money and beads. Indian Coinage: This is the most impressive section and one can spend hours here as it displays coins through a time line right from 6-4 century B.C. to those of Independent India. Section Three: Coins to Bank Notes and Section ,Four: Indian Paper Money: These sections deal with the transition of coins to Bank Notes. They display Promissory Notes, Cheques, Bills of Exchange, Hundies and Early Bank Notes. Notes issued by the Bank of Bengal (Unifaced, Commerce and Britannia series), Bank Of Bombay, British India notes with hand-made paper of denominations of 10, 20, 50,100, 500 and 1000 have been displayed. Section Five: Know Your Currency: This section talks about how currency is managed in India and the features of the contemporary Mahatma Gandhi Series of notes. Section Six: RBI and You: This section covers everything you wanted to know about the RBI and didn’t know whom to ask. It displays the functions of the central bank of the country, its role in the economy and how it touches the day-to-day life of the common man. So if one is interested in the history of the money and rare coins, then this museum is a must-see place.

The St. Bonaventure Church by the sea in the Erangal area of Malad (West). It was built in the 16th Century by the Portuguese. The church has a simple yet beautiful facade with high ceilings and a large dome at the altar. Throughout the year, except on Sundays when the mass is held, the church of St. Bonaventure lies desolate. However, every year, on the 6th of January, which is celebrated as the Feast of Erangal, the church comes alive. A huge fair is held in front of the church, and people start flocking the place from early in the morning to attend the mass. Following this they go to the fair, which set right next to the beach, is like a wonderland.

The Knesset Eliyahoo, also Knesset Eliyahu, is an 1885 Orthodox synagogue in Fort (area) in down town Mumbai. It was built by Jacob Elias Sassoon and his brothers to commemorate their father and is run by the Jacob Sassoon Trust. In 1985, the President of India, Giani Zail Singh, visited to honor the centennial of the building of the synagogue. The Indian Post Office issued a stamp in honour of the centennial.Until the November 2008 Mumbai attacks, services were led by Rabbi Gavriel Holtzberg.

Magen David Synagogue

The Magen David Synagogue is one of the two synagogues in Mumbai city built due to the efforts and enterprise of the Sasson family. This tall and impossible edifice, notable for its Gothic character lent by the four frontal pillars, towers over all the other buildings in the neighboring areas. Completed in 1861, this synagogue was erected at the sole expense of David Sassoon Esq. one of the founding fathers of this city. This synagogue, having been found insufficient to accommodate the increasing Jewish congregation was enlarged and renovated by Sir Jacob E. Sassoon Bart. in 1910. The ceiling lights of this synagogue were donated by Eugene Schildkrant of Great Neck, New York in memory of his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Schildkrant in 1956. The synagogue is a one-storeyed structure, has an expensive prayer hall with the upper gallery reserved exclusively for ladies. It has an exquisite ‘Tebah’ and ‘Hekhal’. The synagogue today is managed by a group of Trustees belonging to the Sir Jacob Sassoon Charity Trust.

Erected in 1864, the synagogue was constructed by David Sassoon in Victorian style for the growing population of Baghdadi Jews whom had fled from prosecution of the governor and Wali of Baghdad, the extortioner Daud Pasha. By 1910, the Jewish community in the neighbouthood of Byculla had increased to the extent that the synagogue could no longer service all the devotees and the synagogue was extended with the help of Jacob, David Sassoon’s grandson.

The temple of Shree Balaji Mandir is located at Charkop, Kandivali (West). It is claimed to be the second home place of Lord Venkateshwara after Tirupati Temple. Every month Abhishekham is performed of shree balaji, The Abhishekham is performed on Shravana Nakshatra. Lord Shree Balaji is offered arghyam, padhvam, etc. followed by applying scented oil (Attar) on Shree Balaji. Then turmeric paste is applied on Lord Balaji, then the idol is bathed with perfumed water. Meanwhile Purusha Sukta, Sri Sukta, Bhu Sukta, Shanti Panchakam and brahma Smahita are sung by the priest of our Shree Balaji Temple, Charkop. Then the lord of wealth is dressed up and garlands are offered. Vaikunth Ekadashi is the event celebrated at Lord Balaji Temple. Vaikunta Ekadashi is the Ekadashi that is observed in the Shukla Paksha of Dhanurmas as per the Hindu Calendar. Believers claim that the temple is built considering the Shilpa Shashtra, Agama Shashtra and Vastu Shashtra becomes the wish full-filler one. The Mandir was established in 1983 under the auspices of Srirangam Srimad Andavan Ashramam. Before talking about the Mandir, a few words about the Ashramam. This Ashramam is headquartered at Srirangam in Tamil Nadu, between the rivers of Cauvery and Kolledam, near Tiruchirappally and is presently headed by an eminent scholar-Saint, His Holiness Sri Ranga Ramanuja ahadesikan (Srimushnam Andavan). The Ashramam has Branches in New Delhi, Rishikesh, Hyderabad, Tirumala-Tirupathi, Bangalore, Mysore (Melkottai), Chennai, Neyveli, Kumbakonam, Dombivli (near Mumbai), etc. The Ashramam besides being a religious institution of Vaishnavites (following Munithraya Parampara), has several social activities to its credit. It is conducting an Arts and Science College at Srirangam which offers courses on latest lines including Micro-Biology, Computer Science etc. It publishes a monthly magazine “Sri Ranganatha Paduka” which carries informative articles on religion and Hindu scriptures. (Sachiv- Secretary, Alaya- House, meaning Secretariat). Most state Governments in India headquarters’ are known as Secretariats. However, since Ministers (Mantri in Marathi/Hindi) also sit in the same building and to underline the fact that Ministers are powerful in a democracy, the name was changed to Mantralaya in the early eighties. Mantralaya is a seven storeyed building which houses most of the departments of the state Government in this building. The Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister sit on the sixth floor. The Chief Secretary, sits on the fifth floor. Due to an increasing number of departments and staff, a new “annexe” building was built. Also, a new administrative building of 13 floors was constructed opposite Mantralaya to accommodate additional departments.

Taxi : Metered taxis are a useful mode of transport in Mumbai. Since they are metered, they are economical and also relatively comfortable. However night fares are more expensive and charts for calculating fares are available online. It might be sensible to use one particular taxi throughout the stay, as most taxi drivers have mobile phones they can be contacted easily. Bus : BEST bus services are second most extensive intra city transport system. Mumbai has an excellent road transportation system. State owned buses connect Mumbai to all neighbouring points. Many Deluxe and Super Deluxe buses are available to travel in and out of the city. Bus fare is about Rs 3 to 4 per kilometer.

Train : Mumbai is the headquarters of Indian railway system. Chhatrapati Shivaji Railway Station is the major one which connects all most parts of Indian cities to Mumbai. Other railway stations in Mumbai are Dadar and Kurla, and Churchgate. Suburban railway is the backbone of the transport system. Three main railway lines connect most of the city. Trains are always on time and economical, however they might be crowded in peak hours. The basic fare may range from 5 INR to 100 INR. The trains run from 4 am to 1pm, and there are trains arriving at the station every five minutes. It is also advisable to take care of valuables even in the first class section. Rush hour constitutes office timings from 8 am to 11 am and 5 pm to 7pm. The traveller should avoid the rush hour. Women travellers can make use of the separate women compartments and they might be less crowded than the general compartments.

Air : Mumbai has its own domestic and international airport, known as Chatrapati Shivaji international airport , Located 30 km from centre of the city, Nariman Point and 4 km from the domestic terminal of Santa Cruz, this airport operates 24X7. Others : Auto richshaws: The auto rickshaws of Mumbai are the most common means of transport and are cheap also. they charge Rs 9 for the first 1.6 km and Rs 5 for km covered afterwards. The night charge is 25% more of the total charge. However, one needs to be careful as these auto rickshaws use longer routes in order to increase their fare amount.
