Melghat Tiger Reserve is among the first nine Tiger Reserves situated in the northern part of Amravati district of Maharashtra state. This reserve came into existence in 1974, which lies in Satpura ranges in Vidarbha region and is spread over an area of around 1677 sq. km. The core area of the reserve, Gugamal National Park covers 361.28 sq. km. area and buffer area of the reserve, the Melghat Tiger Sanctuary covers 788.28 sq. km. The reserve has dry deciduous forests with 41 species of mammals, 250 species of birds, 24 species of fish and 160 species of reptiles and snakes. Tourists can spot various types of flora including teak, lendia, moyan, ain and many other species. The reserve has 90 species of trees, 66 species of shrubs, 320 species of herbs, 56 species of climbers, 23 sedge species and 99 grass species. Tiger, leopard, wild dog are some of the animals that can be seen in the reserve. The five rivers that flow from this reserve are Sipna, Khandu, Dolar, Gadga and Khapra which are the tributaries of the main River Tapti. The reserve also has around 61 villages that are inhabited by various tribes including Korku tribe, Gond, Nihal, Balai and others. Moreover, tourists can also explore the archaeological richness as there is Gavilgarh Fort on the Chikhaldara plateau and Narnala Fort in the south-eastern part of Melghat Tiger Reserve.

HistoryEdit

There are passes in Melghat that invaders from the north traversed to reach Berar, where the Imad Shahi dynasty had been founded in 1484. The historic forts, Narnala and Gawilgarh, guarded the main east-west ridge. In 1803, in the Second Maratha War, Colonel Arthur Wellesley, who later became the Duke of Wellington, captured the Gawilgarh fort from the Marathas.

Chikhaldara Wildlife Sanctuary is a beautiful hill station replete with wildlife, lakes, waterfalls and viewpoints, located in the Amravati District in the Vidarbha region of the state of Maharashtra. It is situated at an altitude of 1118 m and has the added dimension of being the only coffee-growing area in Maharashtra. This city is named after Keechaka, who was killed by Bhima and was thrown into this valley, named ‘dari’ in Marathi. The valley thus came to be known as Keechakadara or Chikhaldara. It is the place where the Pandavas had taken refuge for year of ‘Agyatwaas’. It is also believed that Lord Krishna brought his wife Rukmini at this place.Chikhaldara is full of deep valleys, and these valleys are full of velvet mist and majestic trees and famous for its sanctuaries, scenic points and historical forts situated in and around the hill station. Chikhaldara and surrounding regions attracts a lot of nature lovers for its forests and the wildlife that thrives.

Chikaldara was discovered by Captain Robinson of the Hyderabad Regiment in 1823. The Englishmen found it particularly attractive because the lush green hue of the place reminded them of England. When the leaves fell in September/October, they were reminded of autumn in England. There was even a proposal to make it the seat of the Government of India.

Gurukunj Ashram, Mozari Famed for the Gurukunj Ashram established here by Rashtrasant Tukdoji after his release from the jail, Mozari Village is located at a distance of about 120 kms from Nagpur City. Situated on the eastern outskirts of Amravati City along the state highway, Mozari Village is closely associated with the social reformist saint. In his last days, he was suffering from cancer. All possible efforts were made to cure the fatal disease, but Rashtrasant left his mortal body on 11th October 1968 at 4.58 p.m. in the Gurukunj Ashram, to rest in eternal peace. His Maha Samadhi is built just in front of his Gurukunj Ashram, which inspires us to follow his path of action and selfless devotion.

HistoryEdit

Tukdoji after his release from the jail, initiated social reform movements and struggled hard against blind faith, untouchabilty, superstition, cow-slaughter and other social evils, He established his Gurukunj Ashram at Mozari village about 120 Km from Nagpur, where constructive programmes were implemented with active participation of his followers. At the very entrance of the Ashram he inscribed its motto as-
‘Open to all is the temple of ours’
‘Welcome to all from every creed and religion’
‘Welcome to all from home and abroad’
After the dawn of independence, Tukdoji concentrated his full attention to rural reconstruction works and organised many kinds of camps for constructive workers. His activities were impressive and of great national interest. Dr. Rajendrea Prasad, Prasident of India showered love on him respectfully bestowed the honor ‘Rashtrasant’ in one of the great gatherings at Gurukunj Ashram. Thereafter people widely called him ‘Rashtrasant’ with great respect.

Gavilgad Fort is near Chikhaldara hill station in Amravati district, Maharashtra. It is believed that the fort is 300 years old. Some beautifully carved idols, which is believed to carve during the period of the Nizams, when Elichpur was their capital are worth to see. Elephants, bulls, tigers, lions and Hindi, Urdu and Arabic scripts comprise the carvings on the walls of the fort. Idols of Lord Hanuman and Lord Shankar are also seen in the fort. 10 cannons made of iron; copper and brass are also there inside the fort. Gavlis, who were rulers of the shepherd community in the 12th /13th century built the fort. Then came on the hands of Gond community till the time they were defeated by the Mughals. The fort is at present under the Melghat Tiger Project. Nagpur is the nearest airport, 230 km away, while Amravati is the nearest railway station, 100 km away. Chikhaldara is well connected by road.

The fort was built by the Gavlis, who were rulers of the shepherd community in the 12th /13th century. Later on the fort came under the reigns of the mighty Gond community, till the time they were defeated by the Mughals. The fort is currently under the Melghat Tiger Project. It has bravely endured the sensational battles and today its ramparts remain, tranquil and deserted.

The Gavilgarh hill in Maharashtra is a high ridge running east-west which has its highest point at Vairat and forms the south-western boundary of the Melghat Sanctuary, which is located there. A prime habitat of the tiger, the Melghat area was declared a Tiger Reserve in 1974. The forest is tropical dry deciduous in nature, dominated by Teak Tectona Grandis. The Reserve is a catchment area for five major rivers: Khandu, Khapra, Sipna, Gadga and Dolar, all of which are tributaries of the River Tapti and the core reserve area at the Melghat Reserve is called the Gugarnal National Park. Melghat Sanctuary is the prime Biodiversity repository of the state. A wide array of flora and fauna crowd the Melghat Sanctuary, making it a paradise for nature enthusiasts. Apart from Teak Tectona Grandis, other species of trees are Lagerstroemia Parviflora, Emblica Officinalis, Terminalia Tomentosa and Anogeissus Latifolia. The primary animals around the reserve are the tiger, leopard, sloth bear, wild dog, jackal, sambar, gaur, barking deer, nilgai, chital, flying squirrel, wild boar, langur, Rhesus monkey, porcupine, pangolin, among several others.

HistoryEdit

Gugamal National Park was carved out from the Melghat Tiger Reserve in 1987 in Amravati District, Maharashtra. Lying in Satpura ranges, this national park covers a buffer area of 361.28 sq. km.Tourists can spot animals like chausingha, nilgai, hyena are some of the flora that can be seen in the park. Tourists can also indulge in several activities in this park like trekking, jungle safari and birdwatching.
