Manikgarh Fort

India /Maharashtra /Chandrapur /Gadchandur

Sight Address : Manikgarh Fort is situated near Gadchandur in Chandrapur district of Maharashtra. Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Manikgad(also called Gadchandur) is an ancient fort in Chandrapur district, Maharashtra. It is a hill fort 507 metres above sea level built by the Naga kings in the 9 CE. Currently the forts is in a state of ruins and is frequently by wild animals that live in the vicinity like panthers and boars. Several monuments of historical importance are also present in the area.

Manikgarh Fort

Manikgarh Fort

HistoryEdit

Manikgad was built by the last Mana Naga King – Gahilu. The Mana Nagas settled in this area around 9 CE. Initially, the fort was named Manikagad after the patron deity of the Mana Nagas – Manikadevi – but later on this got shortened to Manikgad. The fort is built of large black stones and it would have been a formidable fort in its time. Rampart walls of the fort enclose a valley which has ruins of old buildings and store-houses. Outlines of some apartments are visible against the rampart walls. The southern bastion along with its supporting wall has collapsed. In the valley below lies a cannon which likely was mounted on that bastion. Unlike a cast iron cannon, this cannon made of several iron straps welded together. The gateway of the fort is still intact.

Devotees throng the temple throughout the year which is dedicated to Lord Parsawanath and is very popular with the community. It has very beautiful sculptures. The Tirtha is situated in a vast garden in the vicinity of Bhadravati village. Here is installed an idol of MULANAYAKA Shri Kesariya Parshvanath Bhagavan. It is black in complexion, 152 cms in height and in semi-padmasana posture. The remnants found here indicate that this tirtha must be very old; but how old, it is not deciphered. Till the last century half of the idol of Shri Parshvanath Bhagavan was buried in the ground. People therefore knew it as Kesariababa, and applied vermilion on it. Thereafter, the Shvetambara Jain Sanghas requested the Government to hand over to them the temple that was in Government custody. The Government conceded and thereafter the Shri Sangha got the tirtha repaired and renovated.

Anandvan Ashram, Warora

India /Maharashtra /Chandrapur /Warora

Sight Address : The Anandvan Ashram, located in the town of Warora, is 45 kilometres from Chandrapur city. Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Anandvan Ashram, Warora, this centre mostly serves as a community rehabilitation centre for patients suffering from leprosy. It also serves the disabled, from downtrodden sections of society. Maharogi Seva Samiti, which also handles the Lok Biradari Prakalp and the Somnath Project, runs and manages this centre. In the ashram, there are numerous small-scale and home-based industry units. These are run by the residents for generating income, which can cover additional requirements of the ashram. Baba Amte developed Anandwan to be a self-contained ashram (which could be described as “a kibbutz for the sick”). Residents are self-sufficient in terms of basic subsistence through agriculture. Land fertility in the region has been revived and is maintained by using organic farming techniques and micro-water management. In addition, the ashram has various home-based, small-scale industry units run by the residents that generate income to cover additional requirements, Baba Amte also shaped Anandwan as an environmentally-aware community to have practices in place for energy utilization, waste recycling and minimizing usage of natural resources that might otherwise lead to their depletion. Anandwan today spreads over 200 hectares and has two hospitals, a university, an orphanage, a school for the blind and a technical wing. More than 5,000 people are dependent on it for their livelihood.
