HistoryEdit

The Amar Mahal Palace was planned by a French architect, in 1862. However, it was not built until the 1890s. Maharani Tara Devi, wife of the late Maharaja Hari Singh (son of Raja Amar Singh) lived in this palace till her death in 1967.Subsequently, her son Dr. Karan Singh and his wife Mrs. Yasho Rajya Lakshmi converted the palace into a museum to house rare books and works of art, with the objective of “Encouraging artistic talent, to establish fine arts centre and to collaborate with other like minded institutions for promotion of Indian arts”. For this purpose, they transferred the palace property to a trust named as the “Hari-Tara Charitable Trust”. Dr. Karan Singh, voluntarily surrendered the Privy Purse paid to him by the Government of India as a former ruler of Jammu, one of the Princely state of India, and used the funds to set up this museum named in memory of his parents. The museum was inaugurated by the late Mrs. Indira Gandhi, Prime Minister of India, on April 13, 1975. To promote the stated objectives, the Trust arranges guided tours, book readings, lectures, film shows and hobby classes and other visitor friendly activities in the Museum. Scholarly exchanges, workshops and exhibitions are also regular features held by the Trust.[5][6] The Dogra-Pahari paintings displayed in the museum were creation of the second half of the 18th century in Jammu and Himachal Pradesh of the Kangra school of art. To quote the words of Dr Karan Singh, the Raja behind the setting up of the Museum, “The whole effect is to transport one into a fascinating miniature world with its own aura and ethos”.

Sight Address : Mansar Lake is situated 62 km from Jammu. Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Mansar Lake is a sacred site that is popular among tourists as the legacy of Manasa Sarovar or ‘the personification of purity’. This beautiful lake measures more than a mile in length and half-a-mile in width and is surrounded by lush green forests. A shrine dedicated to the Hindu Snake God, Sheshnag, sits on the banks of the river. According to local belief, newly wed couples should seek the blessings of Sheshnag by doing three ‘parikrama’ or revolutions around the lake as it brings them good luck. Another belief associated with the lake is that taking a dip in the lake absolves people from their sins. Travellers can also choose to undertake boating at the Mansar Lake.Apart from the Sheshnag temple, tourists can also visit the Durga Temple, Parvathi Shiva or Umapati Mahadev Temple, and Narasimha Temple located nearby. A wildlife sanctuary is also located in proximity to the Lake.

HistoryEdit

The history of mansar and surinsar goes back to the time of Mahabhartata. Babar Vahan, son of Arjun and Ulpi (daughter of king Nag), was ruling this area during Mahabhartata. After the war of the mahabhartata arjun performed “Ashwamegh Yagya” to prove his supriority over the land. The horse (used as sign of power for Ashwamegh Yagya) was captured by Babar Vahan at village ‘khoon’ nearby village Ramkot on dhar Udhampur road where Arjun was killed by babar vahan. With joy of victory, babar vahan presented the head of Arjun to his mother Ulpi. She told him that he has killed his father. To make arjun alive again, mani from sheshnag was required. Hence babar vahan made a surang through his arrow and formed surangsar which is now named as surinsar. After defeating sheshnag and capturing mani, babar vahan came out at manisar later on known as mansar.

HistoryEdit

Acknowledged as one of the oldest forts in Jammu, Bahu Fort has always been a source of attraction for a number of tourists. The vista of the Himalayan Ranges and the heavenly Tawi River provide a perfect backdrop to the fort. Believed to be 3000 years old, the fort was built by Raja Bahu Lochan.Bahu Fort has a wonderful story behind its construction. Once, Bahu Lochan went hunting along with his brother Jambu Lochan, and got the opportunity to see a pleasant sight of a tiger and a goat drinking water together from the Tawi River. Surprisingly the tiger had no intentions to attack the goat at all. The sight really appealed the Lochan brothers and they decided to build the Capital for their kingdom at that very place. They believed that a place so heavenly, where animals didn’t harm each other, will surely inspire people to stay friendly and peacefully with each other. Since then, the Fort has been refurbished a number of times by its succeeding rulers.
