Tulian / Tarsir Lake is situated at a height of approximately 4000 m above sea level, at a distance of about 15 km from Pahalgam near Aru. Also known as Tarsir Lake, this place can be reached after a two-day trek from Aru. Apart from this, hired pony rides are also convenient means for reaching the Lake. A prominent feature of the lake is that it remains frozen almost throughout the year.

Tulian Lake is 16 kilometres from Pahalgam via Baisaran Meadows, up and down rough rocky inclines. Tulian Lake which is covered with snow for most part of the year owing to its latitude. This trail entails wading through streams with boulders and sharp 3-point motorable road till Baisaran and then on begins the rocky mountain terrain. This 32-kilometre round trek commencing at Pahalgam could be completed in one day based on the trekker’s physical fitness and speed plus one must start at dawn. Else, it is a 2-day trek to the Tulian Lake and back. Though each hill looks different from the other it is very easy to lose a sense of direction in this geography therefore an experienced ‘Tulian Lake mountain-guide’ is recommended to be hired. Experienced ‘Pony-wallahs’ (locals who let out their ponies for ferrying luggage and people in the hilly regions) are also well-versed with the route to the Tulian Lake. The Gujjar encampments may be found on this trail. You could request them for a cup of tea which is the closes you would get to ‘Kashmiri Chai’ (Tea) in this area. Compensate them generously to keep their spirits up.

Panchtarni is located at a distance of 13 km from the Sheshnag Lake and about 40 km away from Pahalgam. The spot is named so, as it is situated at the confluence of five streams. Panchtarni is the last stoppage of the Amarnath Yatra as a narrow spiralling 6 km path  leading to the Amarnath Cave. The site is most popular for camping.

Panchatarni is the final halting spot before one reaches Amarnath. On commencing the journey from Holy Sheshnag, one travels 14 km to reach a height of 14000 feet to Mahagunas Pass, before descending downhill to reach Panchatarni. According to Hindu mythology, Panchtarni gets its name from the fact that the five rivers meeting here originate from Lord Shiva’s hair, making it a holy spot for the Hindus, and thus the name “Panch” meaning five, and “tarni” meaning river.

Kolahoi Glacier is known as ‘Gwash Brani’ meaning ‘Goddess of Light’ in western Himalaya as millions of Indian and Pakistani people depend on the water that it supplies to them perennially as Kolahoi is Kashmir’s only perennial source of water. Located at 34° 10 N, 75° 30″ – just below the Kolahoi Mountain and up the Lidder Valley, Kolahoi Glacier is a hanging glacier and is five kilometres long. Due to global warming and local features associated with Mountain Hydrology, Kolahoi Glacier has hollowed out. In 2008, the mountaineers of Jawahar Institute of Mountaineering stated that the Kolahoi Glacier had receded by half since 1985 and is no longer safe to study as it is hollow to the extent of 200 feet.

Baisaran – known as the mini-Switzerland of India with endless undulating lush green meadows laced with dense tall conifers – a combination that is the selling point of Baisaran. HistoryEdit

Baisaran – a part of the Kashmir region, was ruled by the Mughals since the 15th Century. In latter part of the 1400s the Turko-Mughal Military General Mirza Muhammad Haidar Dughlat ruled over Kashmir first on behalf of Sultan Said Khan of Kashgar and then on behalf of the Mughal Emperor Humayan. A polyglot and a historical writer, General Haider wrote the ‘Tarik-i-Rashidi’ – a personal memoir of the Central Asian History. Sultan Ghiyas-ud-Din Zain-ul-Abidin known by all his courtiers and Nobles as the greatest Mughal King ruled the entire Kashmir region for about 40 years during which time he was famous for promoting peace and harmony in Kashmir’s pluralistic society. He even gave a directive to restore and restructure Kashmir during his reign – quite contrary to conventional foreign invading rulers. It was under him that ‘Kashmiriyat’ – a ‘social and cultural consciousness’ of Kashmiri people was developed.

Taxi : This place is Well connected by road.Baisaran located 5 kilometres from Pahalgam. to reach pahalgam Taxi from Srinagar Airport or town centre to should be Rs 2,200 and is a 2 1/2 hour trip one way. From Jammu is 8 hours to get Pahalgam. To reach aru valley you can get taxi or poni ride. Pony rides cost Rs. 500 or less (depending on your bargaining!) in off-season [Kashmir Valley, Dabian and Baisaran ] (Feb-Mar) and can even go as high as Rs. 1500 in peak season (May-July).

BUS : Pahlagam is connected by Jammu and Kashmir state owned road transport corporation buses. Pahalgam is well connected to Srinagar (95 km, Rs 50) by buses. Special luxurious buses will also be available from Jammu and Srinagar to Pahalgam. To reach Baisaran you can get taxi or poni ride.

Train : The nearest major railhead is at Jammu, which is 255 km away from pahalgam. One can reach Pahalgam from railway station by taxis or buses. Taxi fare is about Rs 3,000.and Baisaran can be reached by taxi for an onward treck to Lidderwat, Kolohoi Glaciers, etc.

Air : The nearest airport to Pahalgam is at Srinagar. It is placed at a distance of about 95 km from Pahalgam. Srinagar is air connected to Delhi with regular flight services. Taxi services are available at the airport and taxi fare from Srinagar to Pahalgam will be about Rs 1,000.to reach Baisaran you can get taxi or poni ride.
