Featuring palm-lined streets and an attractive colonial Italian architecture, Asmara presents a dramatic highland landscape bathed by a never ending sea of clouds. Situated on the edge of an escarpment of the northwestern edge of the African Great Rift Valley, Asmara, at an elevation of 7,628 feet above mean sea level has acquired importance ever since it was declared a capital of Eritrea. Home to the Eritrean National Museum, the Art Deco Cinema Impero, the Orthodox Cathedral and the neo-Romanesque Roman Catholic Cathedral, the Fiat Tagliero Building and the Governor’s Palace, most of the Asmara City is said to have been built in just six short years.
An exceptionally modern city, Asmara is an ideal tourist destination offering excellent opportunities for hiking, rock-climbing and mountain-biking. Moreover, the Martyrs National Park, consisting of forests and wildlife preserve is located at a distance of 20 kilometers from Asmara City.
