Art Gallery, Kozhikode is famous for its various paintings belonging to Raja Ravi Varma, claimed to be the first Indian painter to use oil paints in art. Art Gallery that exhibits the celebrated paintings of the internationally-famed oil-painting artist Raja Ravi Varma (1848 – 1906) and his uncle Raja Raja Varma.

Art Gallery, Kozhikode is adjacent to the museum displays the acclaimed paintings of Kerala’s cherished artists, Raja Ravi Varma (1848 – 1906) whose works brought international repute to the State and his uncle Raja Raja Varma. Nicknamed the ‘Lion of Kerala’, legend has it that it was Pazhassiraja who introduced guerilla warfare in the hills of Wayanad to resist the increasingly intolerable British colonialism. This great freedom fighter was shot dead in an encounter on 30 November 1805 AD.The first war was fought because of malpractices of administration and harsh taxation rules at Kottayam by British and Kerala Varma’s uncle Vira Varma.
