Aranmula Parthasarathy Temple is situated in Aranmula in Pathanamthitta district. This temple lies on the bank of river Pamba. The deity in this temple is Lord Krishna in the form of Parthasarathi and the idol has chakra in its hand. The architecture of this temple is in the traditional Kerala style. The building is round in shape. Aranmula is famous for the snake boat race and the Aranmula mirror. There are many stories associated with this temple. According to the legend, Arjuna constructed this temple and the idol was bought to this place in a raft that is made of 6 bamboo pieces. Hence it is called as Aranmula which means ‘Six bamboos’. It is believed that Arjuna had built this temple to expiate the sin of killing Karna in the battle. The boat race called as Aranmula Vallomkali is conducted during the Onam festival and it denotes the beginning of the Aranmula festival. Snake boats from around 39 karas participate in this competition. The boats arrive early in the morning and sail for around 2 hours. The race is followed by a feast in the temple. Another festival that is celebrated here is the ‘Khandavana dahanam’. It is conducted in the Malayalam month Dhanu which falls during the months December and January. This festival is celebrated to commemorate the Khandavana forest fire in the Mahabaratha. Similar to that incident, for this festival a model of the forest is made in front of the temple which is then lit.

Apart from this temple, Aranmula is worth-visiting for Aranmula Vallamkali, the snake boat race, held during the Onam festival. It is also known for the Aranmula mirror called Aranmula Kannadi. Come to Aranmula during the week of Onam, enjoy the scenery and find inner peace in the Aranmula Parthasaradhy Temple. This temple is connected to the Pamba River by 57 steps that descend from its northern tower. The murals of the temple date back to the 18th century.Th Parthasarathy Temple is better known through the Aranmula boat race that takes place during the Onam season in August-September. The main deity of the temple is Lord Krishna.Legend has it that Arjuna built this temple, to expiate for the sin of having killed Karna on the battlefield, against the dharma of killing an unarmed enemy. It is also believed that Vishnu (here) revealed the knowledge of creation to Bhrama, from whom the Madhukaitapa demons stole the Vedas. There is yet another legend associated with Parthasarathy here. On the ninth day of the battle of Kurukshetra, the Kauravas reigned supreme under the leadership of Bheeshma, when Krishna motivated Arjuna to take initiative and vanquish his foe. Upon his hesitating to do so, Krishna jumped down in rage, and took up his discus; seeing this sight Bheeshma surrendered to him and Arjuna beseeched him not to kill Bheeshma, as it would bave been against Krishna’s vow to take up arms in his battle. It is believed that it is this image of Krishna that is enshrined here, with a discus. Aranmula Mirror is also very much related to the history of this temple
