Detail InformationEdit

Baeza had a university before Úbeda and the city of Jaén.
This monument dates from the late 16th century. The most important part of the building is its courtyard. Antonio Machado gave classes in its lecture rooms. Moreover, Saint John of Ávila was its rector. It was founded by the chaplain Dr. Rodrigo López, a relative of Pope Paul III. The parochial nature of the Old University of Baeza led to a form of mysticism among the students, who came to be known as “alumbrados”, or “the illuminated”, and which obliged the Inquisition to intervene in the matter. Some of its most distinguished professors were sent to jail.
