Until recently, the stone building at 445 Smith Avenue North, St. Paul, MN was illustrious in surveys and native study history books because the Anthony Waldman House. However, recent analysis and analysis of the building has discovered that the Waldman House wasn’t in reality engineered by Waldman, and wasn’t originally a “house” either. Instead, the structure was alittle industrial building with residential quarters on the second floor.
Evidence of this industrial style embrace a aspect porch/loading dock facing the alley to the north (since removed); obvious stone in-filling of the first-floor look-front windows; an outsized structural beam higher than the one-time look front that supported the second-story stonework; photographic proof from the Nineteen Forties of remnants of the first first-floor industrial cornice (see enlarged image below); physical proof of a central entrance step into the shop; and wood sleepers that served as nailers for ornamental wood pilasters or maybe signs at either aspect of the shop windows below the cornice.
Documentary proof suggests that the stone portion of the building dates to the late fall of 1857, coinciding with the onset of the Panic of 1857. Another sudden discovery is that elements of the wood frame addition to the rear of the stone building really predate the stone portion, creating the latter verity “addition.” The analysis is current, and little doubt the Waldman House has a lot of stories to inform.
