Ananthapura Lake Temple and amidst the beautiful greenery, is the magnificent temple dedicated to Ananthapadmanabha swami (Lord Vishnu) in the Kasaragod district of Kerala, India. This is the only lake temple in Kerala, the original seat of the renowned Sree Padmanabha swami of Thiruvananthapuram. Sree Padmanabha (Lord Vishnu), seated on Anantha, the serpent God is the presiding deity here. The shrine is ancient and is enclosed by a chuttambalam (an enclosed verandah running around the sanctum sanctorum), the walls of which are adorned by murals. The temple, built in granite, stands in the centre of the lake, which in turn is located on a hill. A foot-bridge connects the temple to the lotus-filled lakeside. The temple lake is also home to a crocodile, which is said to be the guard of the temple. The temple has a ‘Chuttambalam’, an enclosed verandah around a temple. The view from the temple is just amazing. The insides of the temple and the walls have wood carvings, murals and paintings.

Ananthapura Lake Temple is the only lake temple in Kerala, the original seat of the renowned Sree Padmanabha Swami of Thiruvananthapuram. Sree Padmanabha (Lord Vishnu), seated on Anantha, the serpent God is the presiding deity here. The shrine is ancient and is enclosed by a chuttambalam (an enclosed verandah running around the sanctum sanctorum), the walls of which are adorned by murals. According to visitors and devotees, a lone crocodile in the lake guards the temple; the current one appeared after a British soldier had shot the previous one in 1945. The temple priests feed the reptile. The insides of the temple and the walls have wood carvings, murals and paintings.

Air : Mangalore International Airport in Karnataka is the nearest airport, situated at a distance of 50 km from the Kasargod.

Others : Autorickshaw : This is cheap way of transportation facility between attractions and have the minimum fare of Rs 15 and Rs 5 addidtion to every kilometers.

  • Carry items such as camera, binoculars, sun glasses, medical kit, emergency lights. Carry your own food and plenty of water because restaurant is not available near sight.

  • Use bottled water, as tap water is not so safe even though it’s purified.
  • While boating insist on being offered life jackets. Many boat operators ignore Government regulation of statutory issuance of life jackets while boating, which could prove risky, as most of the Kerala’s water bodies are deep.
  • While in trains or buses, do not interact with lone strangers, or at least not more than normal, and it’s absolutely important not to eat or drink anything which they offer. However, interactions with families are considered to be safer.
