The earliest antecedent to the Alton Railroad was the Alton and Sangamon Railroad, leased February twenty seven, 1847 in Illinois to attach the Mississippi city of Alton to the city at Springfield in Sangamon County. The road was finished in 1852, and because the Chicago & Mississippi Railroad extended to town in 1854 and Louis Joliet in 1855. Ab initio trains ran over the finished Chicago and town Railroad to Chicago. The Alton Railroad (reporting mark A) was the ultimate name of a railroad linking Chicago to Alton, Illinois, St. Louis, Missouri, and Kansas town, Missouri. Its precursor, the Chicago and Alton Railroad (reporting mark C&A), was purchased by the city and Ohio Railroad in 1931 and was controlled till 1942 once the Alton was discharged to the courts. On May 31, 1947 the Alton Railroad was united into the Gulf, Mobile and Ohio Railroad. Jacob Bunn had been one in all the introduction reorganizers of the Chicago & Alton Railroad Company throughout the decennary. Main lines enclosed Chicago to St. Louis and a branch to Kansas town. The previous is currently a part of Union Pacific, with Metra Heritage passageway commuter rail service north of Louis Joliet (owned by the Canadian National Railway however employed by UP). The latter is a component of the Kansas town Southern line.
