With a small population of 581 residents, Alofi has the distinction of being the smallest national capital of one of the smallest countries, in the entire World. Sprawled over a 46 square kilometer area, Alofi is also the headquarters of the government of Niue. As the largest city and the capital of Niue, Alofi is earnestly safe and easy, and can easily be explored on foot. Hitching and bicycling are some of the enjoyable modes of transport, often practiced by the visitors. The wharf at Alofi is a good place generally liked by the tourists where visitors can undertake water activities, or simply enjoy excellent visibility which allows you to witness schools of tropical fishes dance around and play.
Located at the centre of the Alofi Bay on the western coast near the only break within the coral reef surrounding Niue Island, Alofi features a tropical rainforest climate without a discernable dry season. With most accommodation options available only in and around Alofi on Niue Island, it is the most important urban settlement fulfilling all the basic needs of travelers.
