Alburqueque is located in the foothills of the Sierra de San Pedro Mountains. The landscape of the municipality is covered with cork oaks, the basis of a strong cork production industry. Its historic quarter has the Property of Cultural Interest designation.
Old Alburquerque is presided over by the medieval castle, Luna (13th – 15th century), from which the tribute tower and Seven Peaks towers stand out. Other nearby localities can be seen from it on a clear day. At its feet, occupying half of the hillside, the 15th century Mudejar Santa MarĂa del Mercado Parish Church. Inside, the highlight is the main altarpiece dating from the 16th century.
Among the monumental heritage of the village, the Las Reliquias Chapel (Gothic, 13th century) and the San Mateo Church (16th century) should be mentioned. Also, in civil architecture, the Casa de la Audencia, La Casa de la Nieve (17th century), and fountains such as the one at Cano, erected on the road to Badajoz with two columns supporting the dome, truly stand out.
