Alai Darwaza was constructed by Ala-ud-Din Khilji, which portrays a perfect craftsmanship of the Turkish artisans. This giant gateway was built after ruining around 27 Hindu and Jain Temples already present at this site. The gateway and other structures in the premises were constructed using the remains of the demolished temples.

There are many architecture carvings found around the white marble inlay for the Alai Darwaza of Mehrauli Delhi.The Alai Darwaza of Delhi :-A number of gates were built around Delhi over the centuries. Some of the earliest gates in Delhi date back to the first half of the second millennium. One of the oldest gates in Delhi is the Alai Darwaza. This is a gate in the Qutub Complex that is very historic and features a number of interesting carvings on it. It is also very large in size and has an amazing build that is incredibly symmetrical.The Alai Darwaza is located in the Qutub Complex of Delhi. It is on the southern part of the complex near its entrance. It was constructed in 1311. Alla-Ud-Din Khilji made this large gate as the first of four gates that he wanted to build. However, this ended up being the only gate that he did make. He died five years after this gate was constructed and never got around to the other three gates.
The construction of the Alai Darwaza features mostly red sandstone, thus making it similar in its construction to other buildings around the area from that time. This is not the only material used in the construction of the gate. There is also a great amount of white marble found around the gate. This white marble is used as the inlay to the gate.
There are many architecture carvings found around the white marble inlay for the Alai Darwaza of Mehrauli Delhi.Ala-ud-din Khiliji ruled Delhi during ending of 12th century. He was also the head of construction of the Alai Darwaza and the Quwwat-ul-Islam mosque. About Alai Darwaza, it is the symbol of the rising of sultanate dynasty during the time period of AD1290 to AD1316. The other three gateways of the Quwwat-ul-Islam mosque were left under constructed after the death of Ala-ud-din Khiliji in AD1316.

Do not believe anyone – including porters – who tells you it has shifted, closed or burnt down and don’t let anyone stop you from going to the 1st floor of the main building for bookings. When making reservations here, if you are paying in rupees you may have to provide back-up money exchange certificates (or ATM receipts), so take these with you just in case.

Others : METRO The new high-speed metro line is the best way to get to/from the airport, and runs between New Delhi train station and Dwarka Sector 21, via Shivaji Stadium, Dhaula Kuan NH8 (Mahipalpur station) and Indira Gandhi International station (Terminal 3). Trains operate every 10 minutes from 5am to 1am. Cycle-rickshaws are still in use in parts of Old Delhi, though they have been banned in Chandni Chowk to reduce congestion. Let’s hope they’re not banned in other areas, as they’re the best way to get around Old Delhi – the drivers are wizards at weaving through the crowds. Tips are appreciated for this gruelling work.
