Al Muharraq, the third largest city was the capital city of Bahrain until 1923. Established by the Sunni Arab tribes in the 19th century, this city is located on Muharraq Island. A man-made AMWAJ Island, near this town provides excellent tourism to the city and has many luxury hotels, beaches and huge buildings. This city is famous for the Muharraq Club, the oldest sports club in the entire Gulf Region.
The city’s historic places of interest include Shaikh Isa bin Ali House, Siyadi House, Arad Fort, the wind towers and the neighborhood of journalist Abdullah Al Zayed House. The Bahrain International Airport is also located on the island.
