Akjoujt is a town in western Mauritania. It is the capital of Inchiri region. The town’s main industry is gold and copper mining. Mauritanian head of state Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz is a native of Akjoujt. From 2007-2009, Ryan Thornton served as the United States Peace Corps Assistant Regional Coordinator for the Inchiri region and Professor of English at the Lycee d’Akjoujt. Summers in Akjoujt are extremely hot, with temperatures reaching up to 50.0 Celsius.
