Located near the Anakena Beach on the northern part of Easter Island, Ahu Nau Nau is an archaeological site comprising of 7 restored moai statues. One of the most beautiful places on the island, several Petroglyphs representing animals and a lizard man are also found here.
Restorations works were conducted in 1980 when archaeologist Sergio Rapu Haoa retrived this ahu which was partly buried in the sands as the statues had fallen. Thanks to him that we can admire the 4 larger moai with topknots (pukao), 2 medium size ones and the seventh which is rather the remains of a body, in the original form.
Quite interestingly, the pukao are very well fitted on the moai heads along with an almost complete coral eye. The iris of this eye is made from a separate red volcanic scoria stone, which is inlaid within a circular cavity inside the coral eye.
