Ahmedabad is the fifth largest city of India and the economic capital of the state of Gujarat. The city is located on the western part of the country. As glorious the present of the city, so was the past. The city has been governed by several rulers in the past and still bears the snippets of the past. Historians’ excavation and research work has revealed the history of Ahmedabad and it is all the through a very interesting story. A quick look at the Ahmedabad history can give you a clear perception of the city’s century-long journey. The best part of the history of Ahmedabad is how the city derived its name. The city was once named Karnavati. It was the dynasty of the Solanki rulers. At the start of fifteenth century, Gujarat state was conquered by the Sultan rulers. The Sultan Emperor Ahmed established his capital here in this place. It is believed that the place has derived its name from Sultan Ahmed. He named the place as Ahmedabad.

Navratri (festival of nine nights) ; Venue:  N.A. ; Period :  nine nights ; Details:  Navratri or the festival of nine nights is devoted to Goddess Shakti. The festival also has the famous folk dance of Gujarat “Garba”. The festival continues for nine nights, everybody takes part into it with same emphasis. Each night starts with ceremonial “Aarti” and is followed by Garba until midnight. The Garba dance is carried out around the statue of Goddess Shakti. Garba is also played with Dandiyas in hand. During these nights, city is been beautifully decorated and nights become short.

Makar Sankranti or festival of kites or “Uttarayan” ; Venue:  N.A. ; Period :  January ; Details:  “14th January, in the festival of Makar Sankranti or festival of kites or “Utarayan”. The festival marks the end of winter and return of the sun to northern hemisphere and hence is named “Uttar ayan”. On this particular day, everybody in the city start the day through kite flying and continues into night with the flying of lamps (Tukkal) attached to kites in the sky. The sky remains dotted with colourful kites through out the day. In Gujarat, Makar Sankranti is celebrated as the kite-flying day. Kite-flying day in Gujarat is an extraordinary day, unlike at other places. Ahmedabad, Gujarat’s premier city, leads the way in the celebration of Uttarayani, and is the venue of the International Kite Festival.

RakshaBandhan ; Venue:  N.A. ; Period :  August ; Details:  Festival celebrated by sisters and brothers. The festival consists of a sister tying a rakhi on the brother’s hand. They ask to be by their side forever and also save them from all the problems they might face in the future. The festival is generally celebrated in the month of August.
