Aconchi is a small city and the municipality that surrounds it, located in the center of the Mexican state of Sonora. The population of the municipality (urban and rural) was 2,452 in 2005 in an area of 358.74 square kilometers. It became a municipality in 1932 but was founded in 1639 the Jesuit missionary Bartolomé Castaños.
The municipal seat lies at an elevation of 609 meters above sea level. Neighboring municipalities are Huépac, Cumpas, Ures, Baviácora, Rayón, Banamichi and San Felipe de Jesús. The land is mainly mountainous making agriculture difficult; therefore the economy is dependent on cattle raising. The Río Sonora crosses the municipality from north to south, but its water flow is irregular.
