Originally founded by the Ga people in the 17th century, Accra eventually became the capital of the West African Republic of Ghana after independence in 1957. Currently home to over 4 million people, Accra featuring several hotels, restaurants and nightclubs is a cultural and tourist hub. The city skyline ranges from the historic 19th century British colonial structures to modern skyscrapers and apartment blocks which were mostly built since the early 1990s with help from the French and Chinese assistance.
The Central Business District or the Downtown Accra areas largely contain banks, departmental stores, and marketing boards serving the government. Other economic activities within Accra City include Atlantic fishing and manufacturing activities relating with food processing, lumber, plywood, textiles, clothing and chemicals. Served by the Kotoka International Airport located at a distance of 10 kilometers from downtown Accra, domestic transportation within Ghana however, requires drastic improvement.
