Sprawled around the Ebrie Lagoon, Abidjan is composed of numerous converging peninsulas and islands effectively enjoined by several bridges. The largest city and the main port of Cote d’Ivoire, Abidjan City served as the former official capital of the country until 1983. Although, Yamoussoukro City now is the administrative capital, this historic economic base of West Africa still serves as the de facto capital of Cote d’Ivoire. Renowned as a cultural and industrial hub within the region, Abidjan is uniquely characterized by a sophisticated level of urbanization.
With most government departments and diplomatic consulates still located in Abidjan, it boasts a wide selection of hotels, bars, restaurants, and a bustling nightlife which is one of the best within a 1,000 kilometer radius. Often referred to as the ‘Paris of West Africa’, this city is a beautiful place which is widely appreciated by the weary tourist traveler.
