Macau Peninsula is blessed with numerous tourist attractions, but A-Ma Temple stands out from the rest of them. Located on the southwestern tip of the peninsula, the temple is one of the oldest and well known landmarks in the city. The ancient temple was built in the year 1488 and is dedicated to Matsu the goddess of fishermen and seafarers. According to legends the city’s name is derived from this temple.
The temple comprises of six main parts and these parts combine to form a classical Chinese architectural site. All the parts are guarded by stone lions. Hongren Hall, part of the temple houses the statue of Mazu. Besides this, the beautifully built Avalokitesvara Hall is also worth visiting.
